I do not like jasper unless it’s a family name. Otherwise it seems too trying hard to be cool.

Alastair is nice but I wouldn’t name my kid that if they (and I) were American and kid was going to be raised in the u.s.

Caspian not good for a human. Good Cat name.

Rowan I like but I feel like a lot of people don’t in this thread and in real life…I’ve actually heard people talk about disliking this name on multiple occasions 😂

This is real, plus Thea feels like it's gotten more popular in recent years, too. I am tired of both of these names even though I think they are nice names generally.

Jasper - Fine. Maybe also consider Silas? The other “-er” names like Cooper, Miller, Tucker, Hunter all sound like golden retrievers or Patagonia vest wearing d-bags.

Theodore - boring. Also boring? Henry, William, Benjamin, anything in the current British royal family. Boring is fine. Boring is easy to spell and translates well into childhood nicknames AND adult names.

Rowan - Seems so simple, but people will constantly spell it wrong and mealy mouth or mumbly people will say it in an annoying way. If it’s not a family name, it’s not worth the hassle.

Alistair / Caspian - goodness no. Stop trying so hard. This is real life, not Narnia. If it’s a name in the Narnia or Lord of the Rings books - just don’t.

Ronan / I like this more than Rowan
Jasper
Alastdair (common Gaelic spelling)
Theo
Caspian

Jasper - cute and not popular, but recognizable
Rowan
Caspian - nice name but I think of narnia. Not the end of the world but worth considering.
Theodore - fine, lots of nickname potential, but so so popular. I personally know three born just this year so far.
Alistair - to me, this feels very British and very old fashioned (in an stuffy old way not a classic-and-now-fresh way)

If it’s beyond personal taste, please comment. Is there a negative connotation I may have missed I would love to know about it.

Thank you!

Theodore - good name but you're late to the party. Based on your other choices you want something unusual and this ain't that
Alistair - goofy, wants to be pretentious, will be mispronounced
Caspian - not as bad as most on this list but sounds like an 18th century ship captain
Rowan - feminine, but not terrible
Jasper - I only know hayseeds with this name, seems like it tows against the current of the rest of your list

What about Tristan?

Are the 90s back? I went to high school with a Tristan, but also Calvin, Kelvin, Tobin, Gavin, and Given.

DCUM explain your fondness for Silas! I like Jasper — cool gemstone-y vibes — whereas Silas is very much a salt of the earth farmer name which no really consonants. What is it about Silas that makes people recommend it here?

Theodore- I like this the best. It's true there are many Theos these days. I love Ted and Teddy better than Theo anyway.
Alistair - In my mind, it is said "Al-i-ster" not far off from "Alison." It's seems exotic but it's not in practice. People may call him Al (oh no!) Or Allie,
now a feminine form but hey it's all blurring together. A lot of British names are like that.
Caspian. I am having the hardest time with this one, because I do not hate it, kinda love it, just not sure how well it carries off.
Rowan - love it, I know a few Rowans from adults to kids, but not too common
Jasper - I like it

What about Oliver?

BEGGING you drop Caspian and Alistair. Literally begging you to consider the mental health of your child.

Prince Caspian - phish song
Jasper - guy who jerked Kate Winslet around in The Holiday, also common name for farm mules iirc
Rowan - love but I do hear it more on girls
Alistair- my childhood crush from You Can’t Do That on Television. No great nickname - Ali? Not a huge fan otherwise.
Theodore - classic, love, solid nicknames. Common amongst umc demographic, mostly Teddys. Theo is cute too.

1. Rowan- I love this. I have heard it more for girls, but it still has a masculine feel.
2. Jasper- Strong like. It's a solid name that people will understand and spell easily, but not overly common. Most Jasper's I've met have been dogs or horses which is strange because it's a great name for a boy.
3. Theodore- Like. It's another solid choice, great nickname selection. My only hesitation may be current popularity.
4. Caspian- Like. It would take a certain personality to pull off. It could be a tough name for a shy or introverted kid. Also my first thought is Casper the Ghost.
5.Alistair- Dislike. Reminds me of a European butler or NYC doorman.

My Jasper is a cat. Also the name of my cousin’s kid but the cat came first.

Theodore is pretty classic. Hard to go wrong there. Lots of nicknames too.
