I don’t understand why on earth you would commute so far for marginally higher scoring public schools. Your quality of life will be so much lower and the schools might not even work out anyway. Why do you think there are so many private schools in Montgomery County?

A lot of people on dcum are scared of PG county because they feel it’s not wealthy enough, but I mean from University Park your DH could walk to work and you can walk to a Whole Foods, a Trader Joe’s and a Target, Busboys and Poets, really good tacos, etc etc etc. Your kids can go to the highly regarded public ES, navigate the charters and magnets, or to St Jerome’s.

Haha, if you got the UMD alerts that are constantly “suspect with gun fleeing on foot” or “indecent exposure” or “armed robbery” or “carjacking” you would be changing your tune. Hahaha, seriously, you know nothing if you “don’t understand” why someone would want to work or go to school at UMD but not live near campus. And those alerts all go “all clear” when the suspect simply moves out of the UMPD jurisdiction.

St Jerome’s is the big one. For boys there are more high school options it seems.

I will say it has a reputation for being very conservative.

If you want progressive, Friends Community School.

I will say that I have UMD colleagues with kids (in public school) in Takoma Park, Bethesda, Ellicott City, Columbia, and Frederick. How are those “armed robbery” UMD alerts working out for ya? (Have you considered that the meeting time is an excuse to either not have another useless meeting, or because no one wants to deal with you face to face? There are certain faculty on my Never Meet in Person list due to bad behavior.)

-Staff member who lives farther out but somehow manages to attend all meetings.

Hyattsville, itself, is very liberal, so a lot of the Catholic families I know who go there are not conservative. I wouldn't let that scare you off at all. For high school, there is DeMatha (boys) and Seton (girls).

My husband works at UMD and we live in Silver Spring, inside the beltway but near the forest Glen metro station. We love our neighborhood and the commute is about 25 minutes. We use public school and have been happy with MCPS so far

We live in this area and would recommend it as well. I wouldn't do a long commute.

Are you Catholic? Hyattsville has St. Jerome's for lower school. The Catholic high school is Dematha, all boys.

Don't forget Holy Redeemer in College Park. Saint Jerome is getting very popular and admissions is not a guarantee. We moved to University Park from DC and could not get both our children into Saint Jerome. The older one is at Holy Redeemer and the younger one is at Saint Jerome. Hope this helps.

I could not get my kid into Holy Redeemer. First priority goes to church members. Saint Jerome's had room at the time yet this was a few years ago.

Friends Community School in College Park is a good option.

If having access to solid parochial schools and strong piblic is desires, you are best off with Severna Park HS feeder area
