What makes Cape Cod more appealing than Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket?

I have not spent much time on MV, but don't parts of it have really bad traffic in the summer? Traffic on the cape is bad too but it is bigger so I think easier to avoid the traffic.

Really bad traffic is relative. It’s not like beltway or 95 traffic on MV. In August you can have back ups going up circuit Ace in Oak Bluffs or at five corners. The streets are all one lane each way. There is not a single stop light! So it’s not traffic in the sense you might be thinking. LOL.

We made the mistake of staying off Rt 28. Traffic was horrible anytime we wanted to go anywhere.

Yes the Bourne bridge area can be challenging and delayed and worth the effort. You can always fly there and rent a car.

We flew directly from DC to Nantucket. Took like an hour and 15 minutes. Picked up our car and - woof.

But OMG the "traffic" on Nantucket with all of the big rental SUVs? The congestion and nastiness at the two supermarkets? The general unplesantness of the place. The entitlement and arrogance? We had a regular deal at a house but found the general traffic/parking/nastiness on the island to be just too much. I'll never go back. There are so many many other nicer places to go to (and cheaper - everything on Nantucket is hiked up on the excuse that it had to be flown or shipped in. Well, yes, so does Amazon with my cat food and that's not going up.
"

Nope. None of this. We went mostly by foot after we got to our cottage, we bought food at one supermarket where they were absolutely charming, though very expensive and we ate out at some lovely places. I think the weekends saw more "traffic" with day trippers but that didn't affect us.

+1

No car at Nantucket or the Vineyard.

I mean sure, but it’s like staying in Times Square and never seeing a Broadway show. Nantucket has some of the best beaches in the world, most of which are only accessible with a car (many, a 4WD).

Vineyard is wonderful. I wish the no socks, loafers, giant SUV, finance bro, New Yorkers and ironed hair, tight faced wives would go somewhere else.

Nantucket SUCKS. Don’t go. Ever. Ever. Ever.

(About to be there for the next 10 weeks and don’t want to see anyone else show up!)

This made me think of this recent article from Town & Country about how the “new money” billionaires are “ruining” Nantucket.

As a sailor, I have to say guy who untied the fisherman’s boat was a next level entitled a**.

It depends on where you are. The Vineyard is very diverse. Some parts are really nice (Edgartown, Chillmark). Some parts are dumpy (Oak bluffs)

Oak Bluffs is not at all dumpy. Its heritage for African Americans with the Inkwell and its Gingerbread houses makes it a very unique facet of the island. The main strip is reminiscent of a vintage beach town with the old school carousel and shops.

Oak Bluff is actually very dumpy. It's the one town that feels little like cheesy and cheap. Also, Edgartown isn't great. Charming side streets and the harbor is attractive, but it's a tourist trap.

Ocean City is dumpy. Old Orchard Beach, dumpy. Oak Bluffs may not be fancy but it isn’t “dumpy”.

I’ve been to all 3 and I agree 100%.

Cape traffic is definitely worse than anything on the islands, particularly bridge traffic.

Nothing is better than the vineyard. Considered renting off island once and the owner said “well it’s not going to be like Martha’s Vineyard.” I didn’t rent from him cause he was making a good point. I have no interest in staying on Nantucket.

Nantucket is way better than the Vineyard. I made the mistake of going there and literally got bitten by fleas.
