In trouble with finances

You can start with some side hustles like tutoring or online tutoring, dog sitting/walking, babysitting, etc.You have a good sized amount of savings and a house. You are ahead of many people.

Teaching is an option but I would start with substituting first to see if you actually like it. It is initially a big time commitment because you are planning lessons, learning behavior management, etc.

Substitute teaching is a lot easier than full-time teaching, so it’s an easy start. But it doesn’t pay well at all (at least in MCPS). My daughter makes more babysitting.

To all those suggesting teaching, it is HARD work, relatively LOW pay, and it is NOT for everyone…. Try subbing for a few days OP you’ll get like 100 bucks a day depending on school districts but do it for the kicking the tires not for the money. Driver Uber or Uber eats in the meantime.
Do you want to keep the investment property, how much income does it bring in, enough to cover living expenses? Do you want to start a business again? Sell the investment property and give it another go!
If you really want to work for the man and have been in business for yourself for a long time, your resume is not going to get any bites in the corporate world. It just won’t. Not without some retooling, you could pursue a PMP for example and get into project management, and you are going to need a major restructure of your resume to sell your skills. Work with a resume writer.
Whatever you do Don’t touch the 500K
Does your wife work?
Do you have college savings?
What do you have for health insurance for your family right now?
You can do this, but you need to get out of your paralysis and start making a plan with your family.

(b) Agree with PP that you could easily get a provisional teacher's license and start teaching. ANYWHERE.

OP here - how do you get provisional teacher license without going back? Our mortgage is actually low so we don’t have to move into smaller home

Can you get a job at a local university that your kids can attend (for free)?

OP, since you are over 50 you might qualify for free retraining.

If interested I'd stop by the local unemployment office and see the person who is responsible for retraining grants.

If monies are available some of the areas of free education can include RN degree and Computer Science.

When I applied the fact that I had a paid off house and also investments did not matter. Application was only 1 page. I only had to be out of work and over 50.

The OP is 50, who gives AF what her degree is in! Dumbest question imaginable.

Best wishes OP. You have a lot more house and savings than most people. Are you married?

Don’t even look at your small business as a failure. It was quite the accomplishment to even get it up and running. No one saw the pandemic coming.

Your kids will be fine. Mine had to have a summer part time job when they turned 16. Your kids can go to a community college and transfer into UVA….as an example. Teach them to be responsible and save money or at least use their own earned money as spending money. My kids are all well educated with very good paying jobs they love.

Again, you really are wealthy, so give yourself a break.

That is not a dumb question and your mean spirited post adds nothing to the discussion.

This is a great idea. My MIL worked at the college her children attended.
