On my shelf too. Right under Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow

Just finished

Now What? by Ann Patchett
Thursday Murder Club
Pachinko
The Villa by Rachel Hawkins

did you watch the TV version first? I was so engrossed in that show.

I started 2 at the same time which is probably foolish,
Graeme Macrae Burnet's Case Study which was Booker Longlist 2021 (I prefer the long to the short list always for some reason)
and
Haven by Emma Donoghue

I'm the OP who posted about More Than You'll Ever Know by Katie Gutierrez. I really did not want it to become a DNF, but after getting through halfway, I just couldn't invest any more time in it. The crime-blogger character was too obnoxious. The author also engaged in one of my pet peeves - the use of phrases in another language without giving the proper context. There's a ton of Spanish in the book that doesn't contain enough context or hints--if you do not have a reasonably good knowledge of Spanish--to be able to discern what she's talking about. I don't have an issue with authors using non-English words and phrases here and there; when it's done well, it really can add a lot to the story. But in this book, it didn't add anything at all and only served as an extra annoyance. Readers shouldn't have to break out Google Translate to figure out what you're trying to say.

Now reading Best of Friends, by Kamila Shamsie.

I'm the one who was reading Women Talking. It was so good (and the movie is excellent too).

Now on to Queen of Dirt Island by Donal Ryan. I'm about halfway through and it's great.

The Guest by Emma Cline was fantastic. Read it in a day.

Oh I want to hear more about this book. Have you read her short stories - You Think it I'll Say it? They were patchy but some of them, really were amazing.

I read Romantic Comedy a couple weeks ago and enjoyed it! It’s pretty light (which is what I was in the mood for) but well written. Recommend!

The library holds list told me “more than 6 months,” and that hasn’t changed in many weeks. But luckily a friend passed along her copy, and I devoured it in a day. I tend to be neutral-to-negative about very popular novels, but I adored this one.

OP- you're not alone- I just could not finish it- really wanted to like it but half way through I just could not invest any more time in it- agree the crime-blogger character was too obnoxious and the interspersed Spanish phrases added nothing but tedium and annoyance...

You Are Here by Karin Lin Greenberg
(Similar to Olive Kitteridge w/ multiple interscting characters)

Lately into the author, Daniel Hurst (fast reads, domestic fiction)
- the doctors wife
- the bride

I tried Wrong Place Wrong Time after hearing about it here, and I’m 1/3 in and surprised to find myself bored. I’ll probably DNF it. Anyone else not love that book?

Ok, finished it and agree with all those things- enjoyable and light and well written. PP I have not read that collection but would like to, thanks for the reminder. This book is a lot like her previous book Eligible in tone.

Next up for May is Jane Harper’s Exiles.

Just finished Lies you wanted to hear- easy read but tough not sure whether I loved or hated it…

Poster 12:49 I also started reading Wrong Place Wrong Time and so far it has been a DNF for me

The Covenant of Water. It’s not as good as Cutting for Stone and it could have used a good edit for length, but it’s better than most titles I’ve picked up recently.

Agreed, I liked Romantic Comedy! It’s a good book for when you want something light but with insight. It’s like a romcom for people who don’t like romcoms. I enjoyed all the details about the production of SNL/ “TNO”.

Really like it. It touches on so many subjects: history, art, slavery, racism and much more. It is a very easy read as it is engaging without being fast-paced.

If you haven’t already, read People of the Book. It’s exactly like Horse but more complex and compelling.
