no not really

Bennington has a very arts focus and around 67% acceptance rate, not a very DMV obsessive's focus

Occidental has the United Nations internships and a 38% acceptance rate and is frequently discussed here. As is Trinity and Miami Ohio

Occidental is seriously struggling financially, and Miami OH has a much higher acceptance rate than it used to.

Someone keeps posting that Oxy is struggling financially but it scores fine on the Forbes financial health grades (and making cuts/layoffs during the pandemic isn’t evidence it is seriously struggling)

Yes, we all know the Oxy Is Struggling poster.

I’m glad this was called out bc I know someone who is just a great all around, super smart kid, who is very excited to attend Oxy. It’s a great school

Agreed - we love Oxy. It was the least competitive among DCs list but they were considering it over 2 other admits that were much higher. Great IR options, nice community, top notch outreach for admitted students, great location. Eventually they were pushed aside by some heavy hitters - but it's my favorite among DCs "will not attend" set.

No, I actually think Occidental is on the rise. It’s super popular here in Brooklyn right now.

Please link evidence that Occidental is struggling financially. I see B ratings everywhere for finances, which isn’t idea but it’s far from struggling.

I think this makes sense. As out of state applications for UCLA, USC, and 5C's crank up and result in lower admit rates...Oxy is likely to follow as students who used to chose the former are shut out and now choose Oxy.

Yes and the kids I know who go to Oxy are not looking at ucla and usc. They want a small school. A lot of overlap with Pitzer, scripps and pomona. Some kids prefer oxy to the 5cs because it’s actually in LA.

It's very small (600 total!), a little remote, artsy, alternative (you can do the whole thing pass/fail). Probably great for quirky kids who are ambitious enough to chart their own path. Not the place for kids who are gunning for wall street.

80k cost of attendance is a lot to pay for quirky. It's a school for rich artistic kids who don't want to go somewhere more serious.

Nobody is paying $80k to go there. The average price that people pay to go there is probably $45k. Everyone gets a scholarship.

Surprised to learn that Bennington College and Hampshire College are still operating.

DP. This was very much the pattern pre-covid, stats improving every year, and things seem to be bouncing back now. It really seems Oxy has access to as many full pay students as it wants, which is not the case for rural schools (perhaps Benington). But urban also means students build resumes, premed students can do hospital work, etc. Oxy's fundraising appeals are entirely about offering aid so they don't become too homogenous during this period. This freaks out the Oxy alum, who then spams us with fear (and racism if engaged). My DC now knows many grads, soon to be grads, outcomes are solid.

There are hundreds of colleges you’ve never heard of that are still operating.

That seems risky for a school with only a $52 million endowment

When I hear "Oxy" it makes me think of the old acne cream commercIals.

I CAN TELL YOU WHERE YOUR NEXT PIMPLE IS GOING TO BE - ALL OVER YOUR FACE.

That’s how most schools operate

Both Bennington & Hampshire are likely to close down in the next 5 or 6 years due to financial difficulty.
