Down to the wire here-thoughts Hamilton versus Haverford?

So, OP, what did you and your daughter decide? Two great schools!

Most that have a run in with the honor code feel the process is unfair at Haverford and everywhere else. But I suppose it could be one factor. Don't even know where to get stats about honor code issues at colleges

Best of luck to DC whatever the choice

Haverford seems better for STEM and perhaps a bit more intensely studious overall. My impression is that you will find more introverted intellectual kids at Haverford but it also has its contingent of athletes who are probably similar to Hamilton athletes. More SJW stuff seems to be going on at Haverford and the honor code is a cultural feature that could be problematic for some

Why is the honor code problematic? Hamilton has an honor code. Does not every college have this?

There were some situations where kids felt the process (you are judged by peers) was unfair. I think it can be found on college confidential. There is a lot of self governance happening at Haverford that can go in unpredictable directions and you also have the added layer of wokeness, the Microaggression stuff etc

So kids cheat then are pissed there are consequences. Got it.

I wanted to go somewhere remote because I knew I probably wouldn’t live somewhere like that after college and wanted a totally different experience having grown up right outside DC. Haverford would not provide that, so it’s a pretty significant difference.

How funny. I could have written the same thing. Dunham in the 90s?

This is fantastic advice.

Judging from the PP's hints, I would have thought kids get admonished for questioning virtue signaling around questions of race and gender
If you don't want to get in trouble these days, you'd better be careful what you say, particularly on social media.

That is it exactly. An accusation is the same as a conviction and that is the end of it. You are guilty until proven innocent which is not possible and then there are permanent consequences.

Just pay more attention to it than you might think. It seems obvious but some areas can be less so. For example...do not form a study group unless you are absolutely clear that is not against the professors rules.

You can’t imagine a scenario where someone is unfairly accused of something?

Fantastic. Beautiful campus and area IMO. Get a warm coat, boots, hat, gloves and have an amazing time!

Great! I'm late to this party, but it was going to get my vote.

That "300 missing students" thing is interesting ... had never heard that.

Anonymous wrote:They were both on my kid's list but both fell off for various reasons. Both great schools, but very different vibes:

Haverford is much smaller and more woke. Closer to home, closer to a nice-ish city (Philly) and benefits of cross enrollment with Swarthmore and Penn. Slightly downward trend of (great) reputation, in part due to protests and student strikes. Aspires to be Swarthmore but will never quite make it.

Hamilton is a little bit larger, relatively speaking, and a bit more remote. Greek life, love it or hate it. Upward trend of reputation, in part due to the musical. Aspires to be Amherst/Williams/Bowdoin but will never quite make it.

You forgot Bryn Mawr.

Hope kid loves Hamilton!

Just want to correct the record though about Haverford aspiring to be Swarthmore. I don’t think they are all that similar, honestly. Location and proximity to Bryn Mawr are differentiators, but the student bodies seem quite different to me too. Swat was actually founded as a more liberal (and coed) alternative to Haverford, by a splinter Quaker group. (Hav was the “orthodox” school and all male till 1970-ish.)

Now that we know she is a DD, the point about the male/female ratio is more compelling

OP-thx that was an interesting point we hadn't considered. she loved the location of Haverford, having grown up in suburbs but felt the facilities seemed more updated and "loved "at Hamilton and the vibe felt a bit more positive and social. figured she'd give rural living a try for a few years! I am sure either school would be a great experience. Also the size of Haverford felt super small. Having a DC at another school the notion of cross registration is over easier said than done...
