I just started driving for DoorDash and Uber Eats…AMA

About 80% leave a tip.

DoorDash includes the tip in the offer but you don’t know how much until after the delivery. I know the base pay they pay so I decline low paying orders or orders where I won’t make close to $2 a Mile.

UberEats pays more but DoorDash is aligned with more restaurants in my area than Uber.

After depreciation of your car and all expenses isn’t better to get part time job.

My car has over 255K miles and I love working for myself.

UberEats allows the customer to adjust their tip up or down or even remove it up to an hour after delivery.

Where the big money comes is when people qualify to deliver catering to homes or offices.

I never think I’m entitled to tips but I am performing a service so you don’t have to pack up the kids, get out in traffic, unpack the kids, go into the restaurant or wait in a driver thru.

I leave a card with every order thanking them and encourage them to leave a rating and feedback.

In 2.5 hours this am, I did 10 deliveries with a peak pay bonus from 7:30-9:30 and made $84. I need to check my miles later.

You can make more than that by donating plasma and you don’t have to put miles on your car or go to strangers’ houses.

And have cuts all over your arms?

Plus have you seen the neighborhoods where plasma donation places are? I’d rather take my chances with dropping off Uber eats in a planned subdivision.

OP Here. Last night was interesting. Apparently you can order gas station hot dogs and other snacks through DoorDash. I was only out late in this area because DD was offering a "peak pay" of $3 on top of their base pay before tip for late night hours.

The first order texted through the app to pick them up the alcohol Truly and they would leave $30 in the mailbox. Sorry no way was I going going I risk it doing something like that!

Maybe you need to update your app. Mine shows: basic pay 2.50. Customer tip 5.50. Total 7.00.
Otherwise I wouldn't know which orders to refuse.

OP, I really, truly appreciate the service you provide. Thank you. I would never dream of not tipping for the luxury of having someone deliver whatever I want right to my door. Anyone who repeatedly fails to tip without having reported significant issues should automatically be charged a minimum gratuity on future orders.

I posted this elsewhere.

On DoorDash, I know what the base pay is for this area. So I can guesstimate the tip. I also look at the mileage to the store and the drop of point from my starting point. I do quick math to determine if the dollar amount is worth it for the time and mileage.

EX. Deliver from restaurant 5.5 miles paying $4.20. I won’t take that as it is less than $1 a mile UNLESS it is headed towards my home for a break or end of the driving for the day. However going the opposite direction, forget it.

As someone who’s never used either company, which would you recommend as the best one from the customer point of view

Not OP but someone who orders on both apps and they are pretty much the same, I order depending on restaurant affiliation and special offers available

How do restaurants prevent theft when it comes to handing over food to self proclaimed door dash drivers?

Just wanted to give a hearty thank you. We’ve been hit with everything from flu to covid to stomach bug lately and we’ve needed these services so much. You might be delivering to me on a lazy day sure…but you might also be delivering when my kids and I can barely get out of bed and are so grateful for you, and you really help us get through the day.

Sometimes I see that my drivers have picked up the food, left the restaurant, and then they’re just… sitting in their czar not moving for 20 minutes. It drives me nuts. What are you doing?! Smoking a joint?? Calling your girlfriend to chat?

They really can’t, but to date I have not had that happen.

Sometimes they're waiting for another order in the same restaurant or shopping center.

Sometimes the apps themselves will “stack” orders. For instance if you just or will be at A restaurant, DD will pay you more to stop at this restaurant on the way and deliver on the way or even after your place depending on where it is. This I know isn’t fair to you, and I have a big insulated bag and always try to deliver before the app tells you to expect it, it also makes sense if there are no other drivers near and you could get assigned to go all the way back to your area for that on the way order.

I hope that makes sense. I’m not making any money just sitting not bringing you your vittles.
