Supervisor Literally Changed My Job To Something I Specifically Said I Did Not Want to Do

Who cares? She does not want to do the work! It is not what she was hired to do. OP, your boss is aware of all the criticism surrounding her and she's trying to set you up to take the hits. Nope. Resign.

I love how the advice on DCUM is so often to do things like get a divorce or quit your job (cavalier advice given by people who don’t have to bear the repercussions of the decision). How many people have the option to just resign if their job is not pleasing to them?

I would tell her you're not qualified to handle those responsibilities, and it wouldn't be fair to the stakeholders. You might ask HR but be careful what you say. They work for management and they cannot be trusted.

+1. DCUM hive mind once told me to quit my job after a bad performance review, despite special circumstances. I stuck it out and ended up getting a promotion the following year! And another one two years later.

I specifically told my boss that I didn't want to work in the marine unit, and a year later, that's where I ended up. I later learned this was a pattern at my organization. Another guy had ended up in the pawn shop unit, when he had specifically said he didn't want to do that kind of work.

The good news is that both of us were eventually able to get transferred into a better role. For me, the transfer happened faster, because another supervisor specifically requested me. Maybe see if you can make a lateral move in your org to a different manager?

Good luck!

This. If you're not in a position to resign -- most of us aren't -- then maybe you could do some of the work without it being linked to your name.

But your boss sucks. I'm sorry they are doing that to you. It seems really wrong, and shortsighted.

Good luck.

Hurry up and get a new job, OP. That’s the only solution here. And drag your feet on taking over so there isn’t as much of a social media pretense. I actually think it’s ok for your boss to do this if they don’t see another solution that would work but you also don’t have to put up with it.

Just wanted to update this post and let you know, I got a new job! And I am working for someone I knew in a previous role so I'm comfortable with his management style. Whew! So glad to be out of here.

Congrats and thanks for the update. I just love a happy ending. How did your old boss respond to the news? Were you able to say your peace?

So glad to hear, OP!

Yep, but the supe knows OP won't. Or at least assumed OP won't.

Thank you! Not yet. I am on vacation this week but will do so when I return on Monday.
