Yes it did. There doesn't seem to be an app or platform for classroom sharing with parents. Only a public instagram page.

Langley uses the widely discredited Lucy Calkins’ Readers Workshop to teach reading. It is a kind of Balanced Literacy/Whole Language method. Some kids will learn anyway, but many will struggle. See older threads on that method in the Education General forum for more.

What does FH use to teach reading ?

Balanced Literacy says it “includes Phonics” but is not Phonics-centric. The Lucy Calkins curriculum teaches 3-queung (e.g., guessing using the pictures), which always is a bad method. We saw the 3-queuing method being taught, and written on the whiteboard, when we toured.

We actually send our kids there and they are heavily into phonics as well. My children sound out words. They do not use the 3-queuing method when they read to me at home. And we haven’t taught our kids any reading strategies outside of school.

LOL--I promise you, everybody at either school will learn to read. The biggest determining factor of reading proficiency in my experience is students being read to/practicing reading outside of school--the specific reading curriculum really doesn't make a huge difference.

OP, I'd pick the school where your child and family felt most comfortable. Both are great schools--you really can't go wrong.

Yes! Exactly! Know it’s a tough decision but on Friday when the rest of the schools
Announce- you will know what feels right!

Any other insights on the aftercare programs? It looks like at Langley JK is not full day so it's 2 aftercare programs if you are dual working parents Flint Hill is full day JK so just the normal aftercare program.

Double check you didn’t sign something g accidentally, or request in writing that your child’s image not be posted publicly and revoke any previous permissions. I’ve never seen a school not take that seriously, so if Green Hedges really is doing that, it’s a problem.

PP referenced Nysmith, in which case you did sign a waiver re: photos (its in the enrollment info)....

Yes, I did sign it that they are not allowed to post pictures of my kids. They are using the excuse that they have masks on.

This is not how Langley works in practice. In JK, the morning class ends at 1. In my kids class last year, only 2 kids left at 1. The majority stay for Leopard Spot which is in their same classroom with their same teachers with the same kids. They do quiet time and play. And then if your child goes to extended day, they go at 3pm when the rest of the school goes. We don’t have kids in extended day so I can’t speak to that but lots of kids do it. Hopefully that makes sense.

Current parent here that just posted about extended day above. I don’t know enough about teaching philosophies to know about different methods, but I can tell you that Langley does a lot of phonics (in fact, I think my 2nd grader would say it’s his least favorite subject. It is an entire subject in the 1st/2nd grade classrooms.) If you are going to make your decision based on this narrow issue, then I suggest emailing the school and asking to talk to Ms Beck or the reading specialist. They will tell you more about the reading philosophy than a tag word can and I’m positive they would welcome your call.
