Newsflash: at least in the DMV, “city” teachers do not make less than suburban teachers. They make more. Oh, and they make more than private school teachers too. |
I'm not encouraging my kid to join the corporate rat race. If she does, so be it, but it wouldn't be a condition of paying for a certain college.
If my kid knew before going to college that she wanted to be a teacher, I'd probably have a discussion about how our $$$ could stretch further to also pay for a master's and maybe help with some expenses after college. But if she wanted to spend it all on some dream school knowing we then couldn't afford anything else for her, I wouldn't forbid it or anything. And I'd be perfectly happy if she became a teacher. |
I’m a high school teacher. I’ve told my own children to pick any field other than education. I work way, way too hard for very little money and respect. I want better for them.
It’s a shame because I think teaching is among the most honorable of professions. |
I assume you’re talking about Penn Alexander & UPenn? |
Our daughter is an elite college grad and a special Ed teacher. She makes plenty of money and is married to a college classmate who makes more. Together they are fine and have a very nice life. And she’s making a difference. We’re proud of her. |
I’m the PP. You should be proud of her. I don’t want it for my own children. I work 60-70 hour weeks for $80K. My kids haven’t seen me for much of their childhoods because I’m always grading papers. They can work less for more, and that’s what I hope for them. |
All of them do as MAs, and not specifically in “elementary education.” They major in whatever in undergrad and do Teach for America. |
We need really good teachers. And we need to see teaching as high status attractive profession. |
I went to Harvard paying $330k and I'm a middle school teacher
LOL |
Teaching is an honest days work.
Right now it is so hard. Republicans and Christian Nationalists ie crazies are making it worse for sure. Banning books, threatening felonies etc.... That is why I would not want my kid teaching. Not because I paid for a great education at a great school. An education is a gift no one can take from you. |
Hell yeah. Public School teachers do fine where I live. Especially considering they have Summers off! |
Another reason not to be a teacher. I’m so tired of hearing “summers off!” It’s not the perk you think it is. I get a 7 week summer. I have to give up nights, weekends, flexibility for doctor appts, a higher salary, and the chance to pee when I need to. |
Nope. If my kid wanted to be a teacher they would go to the cheapest decent school around. No need to overpay. |
You should join them then! |
I would not be happy. We are full pay at an Ivy and my daughter knows she can’t do something like music — which May it may not pay well. She told her friend one time that she needed to do something because of the sacrifices we have made for her education. We are not rich. One income for the most part but saved like crazy! |
