I also had a D&C and would recommend for the reasons above. Mine was at a hospital, but in the outpatient area (not L&D). I'm really sorry for your loss. It gets better and eventually feels like something that "happened" vs. something that "is happening," if that makes sense. |
| There are slight risks with a D&C of scarring … it happened to me. And then I had to have a hysteroscopy to remove the adhesions that resulted from the D&C. If this is the route you end up doing I would ask your doctors about this. |

OP, I’m so sorry.
I have not faced this particular choice, but I do have uterine scarring (from something else). I have a fair amount of extra monitoring during my current pregnancy as a result and when the scarring is severe enough, there’s a small but real chance that it can affect the baby in my case, it wasn’t discovered until during pregnancy, so hysteroscopy wasn’t an option. . I was told by MFM that they usually see this with women who have had D&Cs. |
| B or c. |

So sorry, OP. I was in a similar situation at 9 weeks and chose option b because I wanted to hasten the process as quickly as possible and I felt that a D&C was more invasive. I ended up taking multiple rounds of medication to miscarry over the course of 3 weeks, which was not ideal. Other than the length of time it took, everything else was fine.
You should ask yourself if timing is important to you (I really wanted to try for another baby after finding out about the MC), if you want the process over with quickly (a D&C is quicker than pills, generally), and your tolerance for complications (D&Cs can cause scarring and in a very very tiny percentage of cases can lead to infertility) when making a decision. |
| I opted to have a D&C at 10 weeks, but had to wait 2 days for the doctor’s availability and ended up having a natural miscarriage in between. It was extremely painful (cramps like labor) and kind of traumatic. A such an early stage the pill will probably be fine, but make sure you have pain meds available. |
i wasn't given any option other than natural (it was IUI so i was doing lots of beta tracking...) it took 2.5 months. it was incredibly stressful as i wasn't informed it could take that long and kept waiting to try again i had thought i was done with it all. I thought it was done a month earlier and took a pregnancy test the morning of my wedding and didn't know if the positive was a new pregnancy or the 1st one still not passing. I am not sure what i would've done if I was given the choice but the uncertainty was hard! |
| I had a D&C, then waited two full cycles to try again and got pregnant fairly quickly. |
| I believe B is the safest option for you. |
| D&C. I had two miscarriages and first started with the pills - they didn't work so had to do D&C anyway. |
| I would not do the D&C if you are worried about future fertility and you are older. The risks, while small, aren’t worth it, imo. |
This. I would opt for the pill |
Thank you all for your responses. I've ruled out a D&C as preserving future fertility is the #1 priority for me. Between A and B, why is B safer? I assume that letting it happen naturally would be the safest option given the lack of intervention. Is it possible that the pills used in option B would harm the developing eggs if I TTC very soon? |
+1 happened to me as well. Resolving the scarring set us back over 6 months in our TTC timeline so I hope to avoid another one in the future. (Btw I only did a D&C after the pill didn’t work for me so you may end up needing to do it anyway.) |
| The medications will definitely not harm your eggs or future fertility in general. They are extremely safe. |
