^ asking for location because some of the bus routes might be better than metro. |
The bottom line to me is that North Arlington is not very diverse and very affluent. Scores in Arlington are tied to socioeconomic,s not the quality of the school. The middle and high schools are enormous. Arlington Public Schools had a stellar reputation pre-pandemic but I've started to see them as just too big and overcrowded. While I'm sure some kids don't experience bullying, it's an issue at every school in America, including Arlington. What you're describing is more of a private school vibe because they're smaller and families all know each other. |
What about Thomas Jefferson middle school if you are interested in IB? My kids don't go there but I have heard good things. |
Most people here are nice in real life. Don’t judge off of DCUM - it attracts crazies. LOL Our experience so far on DCUM has been all positive. We are very grateful for all the useful info. So nice of everyone to take the time to answer. We really appreciate. |
Location of work is Pennsylvania Avenue. And our preference is Dorothy Hamm i think. But will a closer look at Thomas Jefferson |
That could work as well - those neighborhoods are close to Rt 50. In addition to metro, look at bus routes on Langston Blvd and Rt 50. |
Will.thank you |
Schools are "better" all over the state based on how many poor, brown children attend. It has little to do with how "good" the schools are. If you control for income level, children can excel at any of the middle and high schools in Arlington. If you want mainly rich, white students at your school, I'd stay in the area zoned for Yorktown. |

Are you looking for apartment, townhouse, or house? Maps at bottom of this page: https://www.apsva.us/boundary-locator/ Closer to Clarendon, VA Square, Courthouse, and Ballston metro stops would be ideal. Check specific location though because boundaries are close. Where is work location approx located? Regarding accomodation it will depend on the price. |
For Dorothy Hamm, which region near metro is recommended? Courthouse and Clarendon? For virginia square and ballston, it's Swanson? |
I assume you are prepared for the sticker shock of what it costs to live in these areas you are targeting? |
Since we don't have any experience of the US, we are basing ourselves on our requirements. Meaning looking for a school our child will be happy to go to and since no car at the start, a walkable region and easy access to metro and public transportation. Any recommendation is most welcome. |
Oh and recommendations from ex colleagues of my husband now working in the US. But regarding schools they cannot help because either they have no children or their children attend private schools. |
For Dorothy Hamm, choose Rosslyn, Courthouse, or Clarendon. Too far to the south and you’ll be in the TJ zone. Look at a map. |
