Those with 8th grade grads this year - was it worth it?

We are switching to private to 8th. I think there is a certain amount of manners, polish that is inherent in a private atmosphere, less so in a public.

I am particularly disappointed that in my child's public school the "bad kids" dictate the learning environment for all the kids.

If our economics were different, we might not make this decision, but b/c we can and can swing retirement savings and our mortgage, we will.

You might want to give some thought to what you mean about "polish". I'd have to agree that private school kids develop a certain confidence in negotiating relationships with "elite" persons and institutions in their futures, because they've done it already, and they have the credentials and connections with other "elite" kids so that they aren't over-awed by status or achievement in others. I know because I attended private and Ivy, and my kids are in privates. But private school kids aren't necessarily better at knowing which fork to use. Also, there are definite trade-offs. Arrogance is one, being over-sheltered in a green-house is another, and neither of these help with "polish". I'll leave aside comments on a certain "ick" factor to your post (mentioning your income too).

I think PP meant "Polish" not polish. Sopot is the new Ibiza.

No you won't, LOL!

No doubt the PP you quoted hopes that her kid can one day be as "polished" as you are.

Well, given that I did go to private from elementary through my Ivy grad school, maybe I made my own point about "polish"! It was icky to mention how rich she is, however.

However, my real point is that it doesn't seem that she has a clear idea what she herself means by "polish", and therefore she is likely to be disappointed by what rubs off on her kid.

Given that many posters explicitly said that cost should be a factor in the decision, I think her financial reference was perfectly reasonable and rather subdued.
