Why I don't like Boomers (spinoff)

...because so freaking many of them have gone conservative, hoarding money, balking at taxes, and screwing their grandchildren.

Tail end boomers could have high school/college kids. Of course, they often do have younger kids, but that's part of what's wrong with them.

My most virulent resentment of Boomers was during the 2004 election. We were at war in Iraq, the world was a fucking mess, and all anyone in the media could talk about was John Kerry's actions on a swift boat. For God's sake, must EVERYTHING be about Vietnam??? Thank you, Baby Boomer press corps. You did your country a great service. I guess solving current crises was less important than rehashing the seminal experience of your youth.

Nothing's more important than their youth. They invented youth and still claim to own it... long after we X-ers have accepted middle age.

The Boomers have had the media and pop culture cater to them since they were teenagers in the 1950's. Our society will continue to bow to the mighty dollar that this generation's purchasing power yields for another 2 years.

This is the generation that has demanded respect (through the counter culture) and when it came of age, benefited greatly from the policies of the Reagan Administration. Ironic that in the 1960's and '70's, they told the media that they wanted the man off their backs, and in the 1980's Regan used the same message.

Their leadership in government has brought us this deficit and debt (from both sides of the aisle), and they certainly, as a generation, do not have the same respect for elders or history that the generation that endured the depression or fought in WWI or WWI has.

On the plus side, they have harnessed technology and provided the opportunity to bring the world closer so it isn't all bad.

Overall however, I think you have to look at the opportunity of this generation as one of greed, self-importance and minimal global advancement.

The Jazz Age invented youth. But look what happened to F. Scott Fitzgerald... I think he was like 42 when he died...

My boomer dad's attitude toward SS and medicare is "I've worked hard all my life and I deserve it!" Like Gen X and Y don't and won't work hard? Give me a break.

The other problem with boomers is that they are and will inherit billions of dollars from their parents, yet you can forget about that wealth being preserved and passed down to their Gen X and Y kids and grandkids for frivolous things like education and health care. Fuck no, that shit will be spent.

Agreed, but the Boomers will claim that they're the first to have done it right.

Did you get the craptastic news that topical vitamin A and its derivatives accelerates skin cancer? FDA has been keeping that data on the down-low for 10 years.

So as not to derail the thread ....

Boomers sucks because they are far and away the most likely type of dog owner to let their golden retriever shit on your yard and not clean it up. According to my long-running, but somewhat small sampled research. At least in Chevy Chase and AU Park.

Now that you mention it, I think they're also the most likely to have their dogs off-leash in Dupont/Adams Morgan.

Hold the phone--retionol accelerates skin cancer? Wha????

Back to the thread--I was born at the end of Gen X. Love how my boomer colleagues and supervisors at my fed job get 80%, and I get to gamble my retirement on the exchanges.

Show me one person born in 1970 who will have a pension!?

I was born in 1976 and will have a pension. I was lucky enough to go to work for a very rich company right after grad school and I'm still there. New employees (since 2006) aren't eligible for pensions. They also give us an additional 15% of our salary each year in our profit sharing accounts. It's awesome.

Anonymous wrote:Well, I am a baby boomer, born at the end of the baby boom. I got out of college in 1981, the last recession. I know exactly what it is like to not be able to find a job after college. I don't drive a volvo, I drive a japanese car, shop at H-mart and Target and Magruders and Giant. I never stop at Starbucks, I buy diet Cokes at convenience stores, if I don't bring my own water or iced tea with me.

I don't like boomers because they won't get out of the way and let Gen Xers start to run things. I find most of them very self-absorbed and have a sense of entitlement. All of my siblings are boomers and they generally have the same traits of behavior.

Maybe the reason we boomers won't get out of your way and retire is we won't have social security when we are older and we have to hold on to our jobs as long as possible. I don't know about self-absorbed. I haven't found that, but I must say you sound self absorbed and rude, are you sure you are not a boomer too? You sort of sound like what you are complaining about.

What is a boomer doing trolling a parenting website? Are you a grandparent?

Boomers could be grandparents. Many boomers have children too young for college. If born in 64 the boomer is 46. People in their fifties can still have children in high school. Do you think all the posters had babies at 22 and have a freshman DC at a private school?
