Back in my time in college, Swarthmore’s mascot was named the Little Quakers, with Penn being the Quakers. |
Dartmouth is caught in between the two. It is a mid-to-bottom tier R1 institution research wise and has a few great grad programs (Tuck being one). It is also a little too big to have the SLAC feel. It is amazing for people who want that mid-size experience with more focus on undergraduate teaching. Dartmouth is the Ivy that should actually have a fair amount of overlap with Swarthmore, Amherst, and Williams. |
| LMAO “Little Ivy” |
Fight, fight for the inner light, kill Quakers kill! |
| Good luck to the ED applicants! No decisions are out but they could be coming as soon as the end of the week. Amherst and Williams will likely release decisions before Swarthmore. |
Sigh, the phrase has been around for decades and decades. It’s referring to the fact that Wes, Amherst, and williams played each other in sports, like the Ivies played each other. |
Yup. I’ve never heard “potted ivy” though. “94 Amherst grad. |
+1 Too funny. No one calls them that, how embarrassing. |
This. So much ego in this thread. It’s not meant to disparage the schools as “lesser” in academic rigor or prestige to the Ivy League. |
|
(I have kids at 2 of these schools and NO ONE calls them "Little Ivy")
Good luck to all! They're great schools. |
Yeah. It's a football thing. No Swarthmore. |
lol dartmouth doesn't have "several undergraduate college," what the heck are you talking about |

https://amherststudent.com/article/endowment-declines-10-percent-amid-nationwide-inflation/ Amherst Endowment Declines 10 Percent Amid Nationwide Inflation "According to a list compiled by Moody’s Investor Services from the 2021 fiscal year, among NESCAC and Ivy League schools with an AA or AAA credit rating, only Princeton University had a higher reliance on its endowment. This high dependence on the endowment means that much of the College’s revenue is tied up in investments. In fact, according to the Moody’s list, 64.5 percent of Amherst’s total revenue comes from investment income. On the opposite end of the spectrum, that percentage was less than 10 percent for the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University. While a heavy reliance on endowment has many upsides, it also presents key challenges. Since high price instability and soaring inflation rates generally have a negative impact on investment markets, these trends will likely have a greater effect on Amherst than its peer institutions." |
So? |
| Amherst's endowment is $4 billion. I think they'll be fine. |
