All three of the schools would cringe at the "Little Ivy" subject line.

Back in my time in college, Swarthmore’s mascot was named the Little Quakers, with Penn being the Quakers.

Yes because it is exactly like an SLAC,

- except it has graduate colleges
- and is an R1 research facility
- and has several undergraduate colleges with different admissions standards, one of which is a liberal arts college, as nearly every university has

...meaning it is nothing like an LAC. At all.

We toured Dartmouth this summer. The AO and tour guides repeatedly referred to Dartmouth as a "liberal arts college," and never as a "university."

Dartmouth is caught in between the two. It is a mid-to-bottom tier R1 institution research wise and has a few great grad programs (Tuck being one). It is also a little too big to have the SLAC feel. It is amazing for people who want that mid-size experience with more focus on undergraduate teaching.
Dartmouth is the Ivy that should actually have a fair amount of overlap with Swarthmore, Amherst, and Williams.

Good luck to the ED applicants! No decisions are out but they could be coming as soon as the end of the week. Amherst and Williams will likely release decisions before Swarthmore.

Agreed. It assumes the Ivies are the best. It may be for some top students but not for many other top students

Sigh, the phrase has been around for decades and decades. It’s referring to the fact that Wes, Amherst, and williams played each other in sports, like the Ivies played each other.

This. So much ego in this thread. It’s not meant to disparage the schools as “lesser” in academic rigor or prestige to the Ivy League.

(I have kids at 2 of these schools and NO ONE calls them "Little Ivy")

Good luck to all! They're great schools.

Amherst Endowment Declines 10 Percent Amid Nationwide Inflation

"According to a list compiled by Moody’s Investor Services from the 2021 fiscal year, among NESCAC and Ivy League schools with an AA or AAA credit rating, only Princeton University had a higher reliance on its endowment. This high dependence on the endowment means that much of the College’s revenue is tied up in investments. In fact, according to the Moody’s list, 64.5 percent of Amherst’s total revenue comes from investment income. On the opposite end of the spectrum, that percentage was less than 10 percent for the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University. While a heavy reliance on endowment has many upsides, it also presents key challenges. Since high price instability and soaring inflation rates generally have a negative impact on investment markets, these trends will likely have a greater effect on Amherst than its peer institutions."

Amherst's endowment is $4 billion. I think they'll be fine.
