First time to Italy…Florence question

You must be kidding....

Florence has the Uffizi Gallery. It has Santa Croce- the burial site of Michelangelo, Gallileo, Machiavelli, Rossini....
Florence was where the world's banking and financial system was created in addition to having a major role in the Renaissance. Some of the most historical events in THE WORLD have taken place here.

I swear some of you people are so pretentious and just concerned with what you post on Facebook that you are completely ignorant. But yeah, you are so much smarter than people in the midwest. Go stay at your cheesy hotels in Croatia so everyone can see how "exotic" you are

Not all 10 year olds are into that stuff. Heck, as a 55 year old I prefer my art to be from 1800 forward. All of that old religious type art is boring.

Keep Florence, add Siennna

Plus 1 on Pisa. Aside from the tower, there is nothing particularly special about it. The only difference between Pisa and other Tuscan towns is how over run Pisa is with tourists

Don’t flame, but is it as boring as it looks? I’m sure a day or two there would be fine, but I don’t know how much art and “old stuff” my family can take. If we are in Florence for more than a couple days, is it a good base for Tuscany, Pisa…etc. Instead of Florence, I would like to do Rome or Portofino, but the logistics probably won’t work.

No more boring than Milan and Venice. If I were you, i'd just do the Rome trip. Venice will be heady in warm weather, with all that untreated sewage in the canals.

This

I feel they are both overrun, but Venice almost takes on a Disney esque type of feel. Going in April, because wife has never been. I have been 15-20 times and could really go without it.

Will you people please get over yourselves? You need to see Venice in your lifetime. Forget what it's become- focus on the amazing history of the place for god sakes. There is no other place in the world like it.

One day in Venice is more than enough. It was a complete hell hole in my opinion. All those damn pigeons, the same glass EVERYWHERE, it is noisy and dirty, and just a hot mess. Take the boat to Murano and order stemware if you need to. We stayed at one of the few 5-star hotels and I hated every minute of it.

In contrast, I love Florence. We have stayed at the Savoy, the Portrait Firenze, and the Four Seasons. My favorite hands down was the Savoy on the Republican Square. The square is lively and it is easy to get to different parts of the city. Be sure to see the Medici Chapel and Crypts. Beautiful.

You might enjoy a magical foreign land called Epcot.

I feel like people who hate Venice would are the same ones that go to the Grand Canyon and say it was, "meh, boring" and just a "big hole in ground."

Isn’t David there? Or am I misremembering things? I thought that alone was more than worth the trip

OP, here. Rome won’t work, since we are flying in and out of Milan. I stand corrected on Florence. It’s obviously more than art…not that there is anything wrong with art. Since we’ve never been to Italy, I’m sure we’ll enjoy wherever we land. As for Venice, I’ve heard mixed opinions on it, but want to see for myself. Thanks for all the tips.

We really liked Venice. It's a very special and unique place. Admittedly we weren't there during the tourist season.

Milan was pretty boring.

too bad you never bothered to learn about significance of the old religious type art and how it has influenced art today.

I'm with the people who didn't like Florence that much. But, I'm not into the religious renaissance art. There were some cool things to see like David, the Galileo museum, climbing up the Duomo. Beyond that, as a city, it wasn't my favorite Italian city. But, that's just my preference, and others will have theirs. My favorite part of our stay in Florence was a day trip to the Tuscan countryside, and if I were to do it over I'd stay in the Tuscan countryside and day trip to Florence rather than the other way around (but that's from an adult perspective, not sure with teens in the mix).

I thought Venice was good for a couple nights, worth seeing once, but don't feel the need to go back.

Why would I want to go to Epcot? I've been to Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Greece, Holland, Switzerland, Canada, and lived in England. For me, religion is BS, and religious art is boring.
