Looks like we found the person who “does their own research.” There’s always one… |
Lol absolutely not that person. For the record I’ve breastfed my babies, not looking to justify my own choices. |
She is right. Breast is best is a myth. |
That, and I lost tons of weight while pumping it up and ate all the junk food l generally avoid because of calories. I was the skinnier l ever was when baby was 2mo to 6mo. I wanted to keep pumping and dumping but eventually it got to be to much work. So that was fun. Other than that, formula is great! |
This isn't true for everyone. I held onto an extra 5-10 pounds while I was breastfeeding that wouldn't go away, but seemed to melt off the second I weaned. I did avoid my period the entire time I nursed though, so that was nice. |
You are mischaracterizing the sibling studies. Some studies showed little long-term benefit of breastfeeding to siblings in terms of things like IQ and obesity. However, the evidence is overwhelming that breastfeeding (during the first year) is beneficial to the health of the mother and baby. In addition, at least one of the sibling studies I looked at had a very low duration of breastfeeding (less than 6 months). That's still not a reason to do it if it doesn't work for your family, but to say that studies have shown no benefit isn't true. |

If you can devote the time, money, and other resources to pumping milk or direct breastfeeding, of course it is better.
But there's so many trade offs that is a decision you have to decide for yourself. That is why people say fed is best. Just do what works for you but don't pretend that breast milk isn't beneficial. we are humans and that's how we evolved. |
Not trying to get into an extended debate about this, but just to be clear, I did not say the studies showed no benefit. The wording I used was "more minimal benefits." Absolutely breastfeeding has some benefits (although formula can have its own set of benefits for other reasons). As an aside I think the long term health benefits to the mother are actually stronger/clearer than those to infants, although again (and as you note) family situations can vary. |
Actually, no, the evidence is not overwhelming, it is marginal at best and pretty much negligible when you control for things like mothers income and education. And I am writing this comment as I breastfeed a baby. |
What are the health benefits to the mom |
As I understand it there’s a reduction in the risk of ovarian and breast cancer. I haven’t seen that contradicted in any recent studies, although I’m certainly not on top of the research. And of course it’s not a good reason to torture yourself if it’s not working for you. |
| Pumping is a total nightmare and complete waste of time. It's sad that women go into depression over trying to give their baby pumped breastmilk. If it comes down to pumping or FF because BF didn't work out, go with FF. |
| OP here. I didn’t realize this would become a fight. I was on here only to look for some real advice, not to start a fight about which is best. I’ve been pumping for almost two weeks and it’s a lot of work. I have been doing more research that the benefits of breastmilk is most important during the newborn phase. I am planning to continue to pump until end of the year while stocking formula and transitioning to formula. |
Meaningful reduction in breast cancer risk with duration of breastfeeding over reproductive life. |
| It is milk that nature made specifically for your baby; not a cow made it, not a goat, not the factory, but your body for your child. Just like cereal is inferior to fresh fruit and veggies, formula is inferior to breast milk. |
