Dust allergy families: how far did you go?

I don't like taking meds every day so I just suffer most of the time. I always sound a little stuffed up. It's probably not good for my sleep at all. But as a parent now I find making time for the allergy shots incredibly difficult (one of my son's has twice weekly therapy himself right now, how am I supposed to add myself in there??). Doing it as a kid would have been a good idea. I did start allergy shots in my mid-twenties but I wasnt able to do them long enough, I was too transient at the time and ended up moving etc. So again, with a parents help - easier! Ok this sounds like excuses.. maybe I should give it a go again

I started mine in the middle of COVID and think it really set me up for success. I just had nothing else to do and was working from home. Now I've invested 18 months and am not giving up now haha

In addition to these ideas, add opening bedroom windows for Q5 min a day

15 min
Also read that Eucalyptus oil helps. Kills mites

I’m struggling most with the area rug (because it’s a big room with wood floors) and the frequency of vacuuming recommended. I don’t have cleaners but probably have to hire someone at this point. Does anyone use a washable rug?

You should get rid of all carpets and rugs that you can’t wash in your washer.

Um, NO. The kid could have seasonal allergies and that would bring in pollen.

As for the favorite stuffies. I found I coukd wash all my son’s stuffies if you have a handwash setting on your washer. You can put them in lingerie bags. Then put somewhere they can fully dry.

I have a terrible dust allergy and air purifiers have literally changed my life. Also professional cleaner two times a month.

get the rug and stuffies out of the bedroom. it does make a big difference. try to reduce anything in the house that causes or harbors dust. chose low lint options.

Anyone dealing with eczema from dust/ dust mites? Do the same apply?

OP here. Thank you all again!

The allergist recommended literally never opening the windows because I tested positive for almost all outdoor pollutants (kids only tested positive for dust but she said she expects they will have more trouble as they age).

This is saddening to me. I love fresh air and am worried my house will smell from diapers and cooking if I never ventilate. I have an newish hvac but it’s nothing fancy. Anyone else balancing this?

For what it’s worth, my air purifier indicator light turns red when I do ventilate, so clearly there are “pollutants” coming in from outside pretty quickly, even though we don’t live in a particularly busy area.

Oh man that is brilliant! pp here and I knew I was getting pregnant for a second time soon so decided to wait thinking you couldn't do them while pregnant but then while pregnant I read that you actually CAN continue while pregnant if you've already started and it can be better for the baby! (reduce their risk) Darn. So that was silly. This thread is motivating me to look into it again.

Personally I balance things I enjoy and the trouble it brings me. There are plenty of things that might potentially help my allergies but aren't worth it to me personally. We open our windows. It's probably worse for me and I'm sure for some people it would be untenable. But dealing with a little sneezing and stuffed up nose, sometimes itchy eyes is ok with me. I don't know if I'm odd or waht or just have gotten used to it. And of course some people's reactions are just more severe than mine so this wouldn't be an option!
