Can you call them by their last name?

Under the new guidance, the parents would have to give permission before the school can call a child anything but their birth name. Even nicknames would not be allowed with parental consent.

Why not resort to last names then? Student X.

My son has a first middle last. He goes by his middle name. No one seems to have a problem with this- doctors office, hospitals, daycare/preschool, friends, family, etc. Interestingly what happens when students with foreign names that Americans cant seem to pronounce want to be called by a shortened name or nickname? They are doing it to purposefully snub trans kids when thats not the only reason someone prefers to be called a name other that their legal name.

Why don't you teach your students to pick their battles? That life is filled with challenges, and that not getting to be called the name you want to be called, rather than the name your parents gave you, is not really as heartbreaking as it may seem to an emotional teenager, in the grand scheme of things?

Are you actually this ignorant, or are you just a bigot?

Immigrant here. I agree with previous PP. I’m really confused about this? What are ppl here so obsessed with being called a nickname or a name different than their given name? Back home we would just go by the name our parents gave us. There are so many things in life that are more important that being called whatever you feel like being called that particular day. What a weird cultural phenomenon. Couple this with depression, increasing rates of suicide, one has to wonder what is going on with America’s youth.

I can't take any adult seriously especially one that is a teacher who uses the slang term "dead name".

In almost every case, the "dead name" is the kid's legal name. So what you would say is "then use a students legal name." Alternatives could be name on record, former name, formal name, and so on.

Seriously? Because when I grew up, half the kids I knew did NOT go by their given name. Dan, Nick, Katie, Becky, Sue, Jackie, Tommy, Steve, Allie, Beth.... which were also the names their parents used. What a pain, as a parent, to have to fill out another form to say the teacher can call "Daniel" "Dan" or "Elizabeth" "Beth."

OP you're making individuals who care about the safety of trans students look stupid. Is this your intent?

Dead name has a specific meaning, though, which means a name the person no longer wants to use, even if it is still their legal name. Some people don't care if you call them by their legal name and some do.

Calling someone by their legal name or formal name when they explicitly do not want to use that name has always been used as a form of bullying, both by kids and by teachers and others in authority. It's awful that the governor of VA is making this official policy.

I’d go to last names only with a gender neutral prefix (Student Jones), like a PP suggested. Funny how some posters seem to insist that we can’t succeed as a nation (or beat China apparently) it we’re not actively bullying kids who are already having a tough time in life because their parents can’t accept reality or love their kids unconditionally.

OP, you don’t have to participate in the GOP culture war crap. Go full neutral and set the example.

Really? I called one of my students "Grammar Czar" last year. I would need permission for that? He was really proud of that title.

This is the most important point.....and it just gets more and more lost in our quest for equality.

WTF do either of those comments have to do with OP? Off-topic MAGA whiners.

I don't know...maybe that schools should focus more on education and understanding why our performance in the global stage is getting worse and worse each year instead of focusing on whether we call someone Jack or Jane. Showing your true colors by resorting to name calling. Real classy.

You are right. We should not be tying up teacher time trying to figure out which names each set of parents have dictated for their kids. Teachers should just call kids what they want to be called and then focus their effort on instruction. The people trying to impose new rules around what teachers have to call kids are distracting from the purpose of education.

If the kid wanted to be called f*ckboy, would you think this is fine?

Yes, I mean when our politicians want to add deliberate cruelty to a school experience that is already fraught with anxiety over things like too much testing and fear of being massacred, this is a predictable outcome.
