HoCo has the best schools in MD. |
| It comes down to how much you want to spend and if you want a diverse environment. |
| Definitely PG county. Or SE DC |
Bowie was absolutely the first place that came to mind for me too. Some other places in PG County too - maybe University Park or Upper Marlboro. Schools may be an issue, but you could consider private or one of the magnets. Eleanor Roosevelt HS is great, and I have a good friend who teaches at Bowie and really raves about it in many way. |
OP requested safe and good schools, which pretty much describes someone looking for nondescript suburbs. |

Mixed couple with a preschool aged kid in Bowie. He will be in K next fall.
I love it. My DH does not because of the school issues. Our elementary and middle schools are ranked well, the concern is HS but we will get to that in 10 years . I feel really lucky because we both WAH and his elementary school next year is less than 0.5 mile away and his middle school will be 1.0 mile away. We can walk or bike to both on sidewalks. Easily visit DC, Annapolis, and Baltimore. PG County has great parks and a lot of green areas.
So many new families are moving into Bowie. On our street alone, 2 new families with kids have moved in and 1 house is for sale in the past year. There are at least 4 elderly homeowners who will likely sell in the next 5-7 years and these homes are built for families and are some of the only SFH I see for less than 450-500k. With all of the new families I think private school will not be any option for most due to the sheer number of kids so public schools may get more parental investment compared to years past. Bowie had a lot of older residents in the past 10-20 years who don't really care about schools because their kids are grown but new families will care. As a parent with a mixed child, he will have teachers and administrators that look like him, which is beneficial. I did not grow up in this area but moved here for last 2 years of HS so I cant compare to surrounding areas but I did not have a non-white subject teacher at all, including while enrolled in HoCo. |
Pay attention. They want to leave DC. |
+1. Try Bowie |

Friends in Bowie attend a variety of privates from Riverdale Baptist, Holy Trinity to Mac Namara. For us we love the city as DC natives and got lucky with the lottery for a WOTP school.
The taxes in PG are just too high for what you get. |
| I would get a house on the water on the Eastern Shore. |
Only an issue if you want your boy to compete against girls in sports. Avoid PG county, horrible schools. Fairfax county is a safe bet. The Bristow/Gainesville area is good if you want to save some money. |
What's with all the racist posts these days. FYI there's over 100,000 African Americans in Fairfax County. |

OP
I’m Curious where did you land? How are you liking it |
No it is black. not hispanic which can include immigrant families from Africa. These are not the same. |
You clearly know very little about the state you claim to live in. Maybe do a little research before giving advice again… |
