Are casseroles trashy?

I made moussaka today. My 2yo turned up her nose but I think it was delicious (and not trashy at all).

Casseroles are such a broad category that they can really be anything, no?

I’m not American. Are there good vegetarian casseroles?

I agree that casseroles are comfort food. They aren't trashy (what a stupid thing to ask or care about, anyway), they are unpretentious. They can be delicious, and they don't have to mean a bunch of stuff dumped from cans. I love a good tuna noodle casserole, or baked pasta, or taco bake, or pastitio, or whatever. Warm, gooey, filling, and cozy.

Yes!

I make a barley casserole with black beans, zucchini, red pepper and a cheddar sauce I make from scratch.

Cheese enchilada casserole is good too.

Eggplant Parmesan
Shepherd’s Pie with veggie crumbles
Broccoli/cheese/rice casserole
Basically any breakfast casserole but omit the meat or use veggie crumbles/veggie sausage in place of meat

Happy to see the rare consensus thread. Thank you for backing me up, folks!

Paula Deens Zuccini casserole is good
Try making scalloped potatoes, that is a casserole, is it not?

If you want potatoes and decadence, try this Potatoes au Gratin. It’s basically cream and potatoes and cheese. It is surreally delicious if you let it cook to perfection, and by that I mean the brown crunchy edges of cheese and fat. I don’t make it often but it’s delicious. https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/potatoes-au-gratin.html

I made a chicken tater tot casserole on Friday. We had the leftovers for lunch yesterday. Not particularly healthy but we all liked it, it was easy to make and not expensive. I used cream of cauliflower soup instead of cream of chicken to make it slightly more nutritious.
