The kids in my kids middle school were split and sent to 2 different high schools. It sucks and had I known it would be this bad I never would have moved to Ashburn.

I'm really sorry, PP. I'm so tired of hearing that resistance to school rezoning is solely about racism and entitlement, when most parents just want reasonable outcomes, like not having their families split among different schools, or having kids forced to change schools during high school, or other similar reasonable concerns.

Sometimes it is but other times it actually is racism. Sorry, if you didn’t see and hear the reasons Brambleton parents advocated moving their white kids out of rock ridge you might not understand but it is very racially motivated many times.

Can you explain? We are moving into a home that is zoned for Rock Ridge.

A lot of the white brambleton parents lobbied very hard for their kids to go to independence because they claimed that at Rock Ridge, which has a high population of Asian (specifically South Indian) students, their kids couldn’t be academically competitive. They also cited Rock Ridge not having good sports teams so they needed their kids to go to Indy to have a better experience with school sports. They claimed that white students are ostracized by the Indian students and the Indian students only socialize with other Indian students. Anyway, when Indy opened, Rock Ridge lost about 1200 students who had previously been going there. The boundaries were redrawn - now, 3 years later, independence is overcrowded. Rock Ridge has 1200 students enrolled and numbers aren’t projected to change for the next 5 years because only a few neighborhoods along Loudoun County Parkway are now zoned for Rock Ridge. Only 1 elementary and middle feed to RR. The school itself opened in 2013- it’s only 9 years old and is not being utilized to its full capacity because of how Brambleton parents wanted the boundaries for Independence drawn.
.

They left in droves bc of online learning. Many live in multigenerational households so they were very concerned about grandparents getting Covid and online gave them the flexibility to travel abroad to see family, etc. They are still concerned about the ‘vid.

No. This predates that. Indy opened in 2019. The boundary issues were before it even opened, so 2017-2018. Nothing to do with Covid.

What did everyone think of the presentation this week?

I was wondering this too. I didn't watch the meeting but looked at all the board docs for the proprosal. Our school (Dominion HS) is up for review but I couldn't find anywhere that our boundard is actually changing. I saw some PFHS kids being sent to Riverside but that was it.

Independence administration is total crap. Average age seemingly 28. We moved our kids back to Rock Ridge and have been happier.

I strongly dislike the principal at Independence for lots of reasons so this doesn’t surprise me.

We did the same. Thankful for LCPS special permission option. RRHS has been great for our family.

The changes for neighborhoods now going to Tuscarora makes sense as those neighborhoods do go to an elementary that doesn’t feed to Harper Park/Heritage but the families I know whose kids went to Harper Park from those elementaries are frustrated that they’re now facing starting high school with a bunch of kids who went to Smarts Mill and not their established friend group. Plus nobody wants to go to Tuscarora. Shame the leadership there can’t change over as it’s the main cause of complaint for people I know who have left or switched out of the school (as staff or as student/parent).

Some kids zoned for Heritage live in neighborhoods close to Riverside and could probably go there to alleviate Heritage crowding. Why independence isn’t on that list when it’s over capacity 3 years in while Rock Ridge sits half empty (literally- 1200 kids enrolled) is insane. Some new developments being built in Sterling may go to Park View.

I think Riverside is close to capacity. The kids you might be thinking of who currently attend Heritage (River Creek neighborhood?) I believe might get rezoned to Tuscarora under the current plan.

Another related issue is that Heritage was selected to be one of the two schools in Loudoun for the IB program starting soon... the expectation is that this will drive up the number of special permission requests to attend Heritage by a lot, pushing it way to capacity. (The other site is Loudoun Valley HS in Purcellville.) So that's not helping with the crowding issues in central Loudoun.

River Creek parents will lose their mind if they pay those house prices , taxes and HOA fees for their kids to get sent to Tuscarora.

Let's talk about that attitude which is really fueled by racism and entitlement. Tuscarora has too many black kids for the parents in Landsdowne/Riverside. That's really what you are referring to. Rock Ridge was supposed to be built before Riverside because of the crazy crowding at the high schools in that part of Ashburn but one of the school board reps made sure her Landsdowne constitutents were taken care of before everyone else. Why does everyone who is not black avoid Tuscarora?

The amount of money you pay for your house should not have any determination as to where you go to school in a public school system.

It was a nightmare driving to Tuscarora in the morning from the east, and forget about football games. Traffic backed up for miles. Show me where it was about race? Receipts? It was about their terrible math department for our family.

RVHS is excited to welcome the new families from Parkview, PFHS, etc. and no one I know is complaining about their race or economic status.

Also, east Lansdowne families are fighting to stay at Weller, which has many more FARMS families than Seldens.

I heard they are getting some from various HSs including PV, but maybe there's a new draft. Their district is expanding east and south and grabbing a bunch of different places.

This I can tell you: as the Board of Supervisors increasingly approves high density housing, be prepared for schools to be rezoned again and again.

Yup. Juli Briskman pushed for the apartments/townhomes at Regal Chase (hundreds more residents) and wants housing at the Cascades Marketplace.

Yeah all to feed into the title one school. Both of those developments are huge.

If this attendance zone map is correct (I didn't bother to confirm), then a small number of kids who are currently very oddly zoned to Park View from across 28 by Dulles Town Center could be switched.
