When to move out of infant car seat?

I used the Graco Slimfit because I have a small car. I flipped my son around at about 2 and a half when it became difficult to remove him from rear facing (his legs could get stuck, again, small car. He loved walking the streetlights(and almost immediately became a bit of a backseat driver "Green means go mommy" (the whole concept that the cars in front had to move first took some time).
