Buying School Lunches

It is unhealthy. Fact. It is only there because many kids wouldn’t have food or would have an even worse lunch otherwise. If you can give your child better than you should

I just checked our menu for next week. Chicken paella, chicken sandwich, taco salad, smoothie, apples, pears, pineapple., lettuce, celery, tomatoes. Yes, how dare school cafeterias serve these things.

That honestly sounds great. What are parents making that is so much better than this?

No way that is FCPS in the lunche example above

If you are at a title 1 school in FCPS, it might still be free this year.
But they don’t let kids get 4 cheese sticks? You get one fulll unch.

I’d tell them to always check her things for a lunch and if one isn’t there they can call you and you’ll bring it or pick her up early for lunch. This is something kindergarten teachers should check first thing by having kids out lunch on top of cubby or whatever. And yes I’d tell them she had a lunch and they didn’t look

If this is public school, while it may sound good as written, it is just wording. It is all Gordon Foods/Sysco frozen and reheated food. No matter, majority of kids will pick option 2 which is pepperoni pizza, burger, hot dog

You sound super controlling. Let her have school lunch 1-2 days a week. We look at the menu together over the weekend and let our kids choose the days they want to buy (usually Friday for pizza and one week day, although my daughter would eat the yogurt bitable every day if she could).

So what? Once a week pizza/burger/hot dog will not kill your child. Being a controlling b_tch may drive your child to rebel in the future, which may actually kill her. You do the math.

Who cares if it’s frozen and reheated? Frozen food still has nutritional value. Kids are getting calories and protein that they need and a lot of kids will eat the fruit even if they don’t eat the vegetables, so there’s additional vitamins there too. I agree school lunches could be better overall for sure, but they aren’t BAD now, and for some kids, it’s the best meal they have all day.

Not FCPS so option 2 isn’t a thing; they can get a salad or bagel if they don’t like the main choice.. It looks good in the cafeteria and the kids like it. No more over cooked veggies or canned fruits.

Plenty of kids who pack have a processed deli meat sandwich with Cheetos or takis and a dessert. Packed lunches are not necessarily any better.

It isn't once per week. Kids are eating this daily for lunch. Add in the free breakfast schools gives out which is chocolate milk, cocoa puffs, Twix cereal bars, packaged muffins, everyday and that is a lot of crappy foods kids are eating day in day out.

This school year, there is no free lunch but I tell him that i can pay to get him school lunch. He says no thank you.

Right, as opposed to all the paid message boards out there.

That doesn't make the items different dishes. There is nothing wrong with them being from frozen either.

The reason they have to give prepackaged food for free breakfast is because they are not allocated staff or hours to cook. Trust me, the food service program would love to offer different items for free breakfast.
