FOX 5 MONEY

There you go. Make fun of people genuinely trying to cut back. Two Starbuck's a day can actually cost a lot of money if you add it up over the course of several months. Just like manicure's, pedicure's, expensive gas, cable, eating out, ect., all add up. Just because you have not had to cut back does not mean others haven't had to. To some people the Starbuck's was a luxury.

hysterical! So American!

It's a luxury, if you ask me. I bring my coffee to work in a thermas, leftovers from what we made before we came to work and there's a Starbucks across the street., oh, and behind my building too! And we don't need to cut back. And I'm not bragging-it's just hard for some people to understand money doesn't grow on trees.

I love it!

The kitchen remodel/redesign thread right next to the perils of the gloomy economy!!! We can all sleep well tonight, consumer spending is right on track!

I'm confused-is what this person wrote not true? Or do you believe Americans have to have it all and at this very moment?

It's the American way of living.

Amen 13:57!! I have been waiting for gas prices to go up and am so happy to see the little cars back on the road. Unfortunately, I'd rather that extra gas money was going to taxes and staying local rather than into the pockets of the oil companies.

I really do feel for the people who are now unable to commute to work due to prices, and have to cut out groceries or medicine. But if this means the Hummers and SUV sales will dry up - it's about time!

When DH was making over $200k a year, I still made him pack his lunch, and bring his own coffee.

The first multi millionaire I ever met, really made an impression upon me. There I was making $2.10 an hour plus tips, driving a 12 year old car, and living with my parents, and I was 22. This man was friends with my boyfriend's stepfather. He had the same car I did, though his was in a little better repair. He had millions because he lived way below his means. He had money because he didn't spend it like a madman.

I have since met many people who have millions, not one of them was as frugal, and some are no longer millionaires.

Sales are down 12% already this year.

If the Hummers, Suburbans, Navigators weren't a status symbol-I wonder what sales would be like. The bigger, the better. If you have a family of 4 children, it's justifiable. But please don't complain about gas prices when you drive a honker SUV with 2 children. It was your choice to buy that automobile. You have to think "what if"-especially when you have a family.

Now this is a productive thread

Is that remark sarcastic, or genuine?

It's a good topic of discussion-my heart goes out to the people who have lost jobs. And then you have the flip side-some people created their situations.

I remember in the 70's in the heart of Bethesda, where I grew up, it was not uncommon for a girl to have one sweater, one coat that lasted two or three years, and pants that had those add on extensions at the end.
It is amazing what we can do in a crunch.
This thread is making me think about giving up cable and the lawn service.

Here is the best thing I've ever tried....Going to TARGET just ONCE a month, instead of every weekend! It's so hard to go to TARGET and NOT to buy things that are not on my list! It's too tempting to buy things that I don't need, but I want to have....Ever since I've stopped going to TARGET as often as I used to, I've been saving at least $300 a month!

I have avoided going there too, just for that reason. I never have that problem in any other store!
