What’s a competitive time in cross country?

Wait. What? That a 5:30 mile. I can't imagine your average JV sophomore is running that fast. Or maybe so?

I think they do. I heard one player said their team runs 12 laps around the football field at practice in 13 minutes.

In high school, one boy not known for being the most athletic ran a 3:20 marathon.

12 laps around a high school track is 3 miles. No high school kid is running that speed. (13 minutes to do 3 miles). More like 16-22 minutes for boys at top speed

Also, kids are notorious for misremembering their times and personal bests. The team and milestat track official times over the season though.

The American 3 mile record for high school boys is 13:38. There is no kid casually running 13 minutes around the track.

My rising junior soccer player just did a 10:30 2 mile around the track at tryouts after already playing over an hour of hard soccer. His Freshmen brother wasn’t that much farther behind.

They don’t “run” or jog. Just train/hiit/sprint.

I told them to quit soccer abs if they actually trained as a runner they could do very well in track.

No dice.

I ran a 3:30 marathon in middle age. I’m not a runner. Just trained for it. Former midfield soccer player.

They should stick with soccer. 10:30 is a great time but wouldn’t be competitive at the 2 mile in distance track.

People are confusing mile times with 5k or marathon paces for the mile. They really aren’t comparable.

Also, it doesn’t sound like much of a difference, but the shorter the distance, the harder it is to shave off a few seconds.

To go from 2:05 to 1:55 in the 800m is the difference between a top JV runner in high school and d1 college times for men.
