What's It Like in Russian Prison?

Anonymous
One of my biggest fears is being incarcerated for an accidental crime (killing someone with my car completely accidentally, for example), or for being wrongly accused of something. Ugh, the thought frightens me.

Don’t want to do time, don’t do the crime!!!
you sound very very uneducated. Many, many people are in jail for crimes they didn’t commit. People have died in prison for crimes they didn’t commit. Just because someone is in jail, doesn’t mean they committed a crime. Our system is imperfect at best, and corrupt at its worst.
Our system is extremely corrupt.

But not as corrupt as Russia. Think Griner got a fair trial in Russia?

I’m chronically ill in a way that has kept me constantly in pain and mostly stuck at home, for decades. People who are sent to jail for crimes they didn’t commit are my mental go-to for the idea that life could always be worse. At least I’m in control of my own surroundings and in the company of loved ones. I can’t begin to imagine what they must go through.

It’s a very old book and grossly exaggerated according to many people in their 80’s.

I lived in several former Soviet Republics. Many of my friends have family sent to gulags or had grown up in a gulag. Anyone with any experience talked about how horrible it was. Times were tough after the collapse of the Soviet Union but it was better than being in a gulag during Soviet times. I don't know who you're talking to.

I suspect because she is so high profile, that it would not be the same as if you or I went to prison there, OP. They are not going to treat her too badly.

BBC is a highly reputable source.

Rape, torture, and extortion are common in Russian prisons.

Read up on it here:

But what else would you expect from a country under the chains of Marxism for so long?

NP. I agree, and my relatives also suffered through the horrors of the USSR in Eastern Europe.

The person you responded to tries to downplay any criticism of Marxism. I think she’s the one who posted a thread in the Politics forum titled “I am a communist - AMA”. She is truly crazy. And I’m willing to bet she’s some entitled American who never lived in the USSR.

My great grandfather was marched through Russia to Siberia during the revolution. He said it sucked.
