how much space do you need?

We moved from a townhouse that was about 1400 square feet. I had a model with a separate dining room but if I had a family back then I would have needed the combined living/room dining room open layout to make it work. Other than that, I think it had one less bedroom upstairs and one less bedroom downstairs than the current house 2200 sq feet. I guess the question is if family lives in town or will come from out of town often to visit because other than the guest room and office, we had enough space in the townhouse for 2 adults and 1 kid. I am a pack rat so more space means more clutter.

About 4800 sqft plus an additional 800 or so for laundry & storage, family of five. BUT it's not about the size of the house, it's how many rooms. Despite the sq footage, we have few rooms - they're just really big.

My dream house is 2500 sq feet (we can afford a lot more, but I am eco conscious) with NO FORMAL living or dining rooms. They are a waste of space.

Not a waste o space for everyone! Our dining room is used 3 times a day and living room occupied at least 2-3h per day!

I've heard the same comment from so many people! You may only use it once or twice a year, if your family eats their meals in the kitchen. We have a walk up attic (very old home), and I've always thought builders should consider having a walk-up attic in new homes-that's another complaint I've heard about new homes-no attic or hard to get to attic.
