I was recently married, some close family members gave $1,000 which was truly amazing, we didn’t expect it at all. Of course we also would have been happy with anything. Younger people gave closer to $100 (which is what we give as wedding guests, or $200 if we are very close to them.)
We preferred cash gifts because at the time we were living in a 750 sq ft apartment. We did make a tiny registry we sent out by request for the older folks who didn’t like to give cash, and we had a wide variety of stuff from $20 to $200 on there including some gift cards for air travel and airbnb for the honeymoon. |
Why are you pearl-clutching over people giving gifts? Your culture isn’t the measure of what should be done. |
It’s the height of bad manners for *white Americans.*. In our ethnic group cash is an accepted gift and used to pay for the wedding and honeymoon. It’s a system that works fine and everybody is happy with it. I paid for half of my honeymoon through gifts. |
$50 is ridiculously cheap, no matter your HHI. I have never given so little even when I had a very low salary. |
