Tell me how you got your kid into Northwestern

Over 51,000 applications. 3600 acceptances.

Better find some safeties and don't get your hopes up.

Yes, ED.

Participate in the summer Medill Cherubs program and apply ED - they let in well over 50% of the cherubs who apply

I take issue with you asking how parents “got their kids into” a school.

Your kid needs to try THEIR best (not their parents’ best gamesmanship), and compete for admission with that year’s cohort. It is on them.

NU alum here. For parents reading this who are not familiar with "Medill Cherubs," it's a program for rising HS seniors who already have "experience in digital journalism, newspaper, TV, radio or yearbook" and who are "considering majoring in journalism in college." It's not some general summer program to use if your main aim is to gain admission by attending a program at NU. If a kid isn't already involved with journalism as a high schooler, the Cherub program is not going to accept you anyway. Just clarifying the post above.

Agree w/the PP, assume WL/rejection and plan the rest of the college list accordingly.

But, ED if possible.

I usually hear about legacy being defined as having a parent go to the school for undergrad, not for grad school. Are you sure law school counts as legacy status?

And if your kid graduated Northwestern - how did they like it? How are things post-grad?

Understand, there isn't something a parent does to get their kid into Northwestern or any school. It is up to your kid. let them figure it out.

ED is a must. A must.

The system is so broken that the most expensive schools favor the rich where you can ED and be willing to be $80k/year. Only the wealthy can afford to ED there…or the foolish who are willing to take massive loans.

Clarification, those who are eligible for need-based aid, per Northwestern's Net Price Calculator, can also apply ED.

Whatever…need-based aid in the form of loans that must be repaid is foolish if it’s too excessive. I for one don’t think the government should be bailing anyone out either.

It’s the best program of its kind, but this advice really only fits for kids with a demonstrated interest in journalism/media/film/writing.

The person I know who got in there from FCPS, did ED and had a massively expensive counselor helping wiht the process. She did have high rigor, good variety of ECs including theater and robotics, but not the greatest test scores. Neuroscience major.

Oh, yes. I am the poster whose kid got in RD, and she had a friend get in from that, and they may have mentioned another friend who got in too.

Same PP Except the ones I heard about were for Theatre in the Communications School.

It's not a general program, it's for kids who already have HS journalism experience and who are aiming to go to NU for journalism.
