If it’s actually only 1% low income and then 32% high income that lied on the application to get the experience factor, that’s also troubling. I don’t want my child going to school with so many families that are willing to lie.

My son was eligible for free meals, and he had some free meals. He answered no to the two questions, and this was a false statement.

Don't worry they have his student ID and will have corrected the omission for him.

No they would not.
We answered no to these too as read them with the spirit of being to try to ID poor kids. But those that replied yes to them even if not poor did not lie. ALL kids were eligible for free meals this year and most kids occasionally did eat the free meals. It is FCPS’s fault for crafting the questions this way coupled with the free meals for all year.

Look, the prep centers worth their salt were telling parents LAST YEAR to check yes to the free meals questions. Plenty of staff at Gatehouse and the TJ administration knew that this was going on. The TJ Admissions office got plenty of questions and always told people that you could check yes.

If your child is at a school with lots of TJ interest, you absolutely needed to check Yes in order for your child to even be considered.

The schools are pushing kids to apply. Parents also feel pressure from other parents that they should be sending their kids there.
It is an easy enough process that people will apply first and decide later.

This. Also, folks think they want it but when the time comes and reality sinks in, decide it’s not the right choice (long bus ride, pressure cooker atmosphere, etc)

Another lie

Why? I know someone who chose not to apply because of the change in admissions.

What is their reasoning?

I also knew someone who turned it down a few years ago because they felt the school lacked diversity.

I can see people applying so that they have the option and then making a decision if they have to. Your chances of being admitted are small but why not apply if you meet the requirements.

Mine lives in Loudoun (Willard Middle) and turned town TJ for AOS

Some of the Longfellow kids I know would have turned it down ( most waitlisted do not an issue). Some of the kids I know have parents that wanted them to apply but the kids don’t want to leave their friends.

My data points are a long time ago but... When I was in eighth grade my private school had 4 people get in, I was the only one to accept. They ask went to private schools. I had friends at tj who told me they got in off the wait list.

Same. The bus ride is too long given DC got in to AOS. Had DC not gotten in AOS, would have give TJ a try.
