I don't know if I'd buy that. Those kids are already on the ground level in terms of performance. No amount of money bring them up. I guess one good news is they can't go down any lower.

No worries. Mcps does not discriminate like you think. They serve very few well and put very little focus on white kids and failed them too.

Not if you look at outcomes by race. Wealthy POC students do worse than poor White kids. Research shows schools treat POC different than White students. This is the schools' fault.

Umm…it’s not just the school’s fault - what about negative peer pressure? Other kids calling them “not black enough.” This is a problem.

White students have negative peer pressure too. There is clear research showing that teachers expect less of Black students and subject then to worse punishments for the same behavior compared with White students. I wouldn't be very motivated under those circumstances either.

I'm curious about how "clear" this "research" is that you're citing and whether it has been done for MCPS, but in my experience, MCPS bends over backwards to accommodate BIPOC students.

I looked it up, and didn't find anything remotely on point for this discussion. I think you and I both know that MCPS does a ton to support and accommodate BIPOC students, who nevertheless underperform academically (percentage-wise) and are overrepresented with disciplinary problems. Now maybe you want to believe that that's because of unfair treatment, but that doesn't at all track with actual experience in those schools.

I was a teacher whilst Weast was superintendent. I was proud to work for MCPS. i’d worked in exclusive NYC privates before and they did not hold a candle to the high standards and commitment to excellence. Now I’m an mcps parent and feel ill about the abysmal state of the system. Bring Weast back!! He ran a tight ship and mcps was tops in the country them.

Clearly you weren't paying attention when you were teaching. Weast didn't run the ship at all. He wasn't even here. He spent his time traveling and giving speeches around the globe. MCPS wasn't even tops in Maryland when Weast was superintendent. Do your homework.

The historical record documented by BB and WaPo contradicts your account. He was apparently a great leader and had high praise from many respected authorities in his field as being one of the top educators in the US at that time.
