Any experience at Maryland state schools?

Couldn’t you google it?
And why are you telling you are a professor at UMD.

I'm hoping for my kid to graduate with a 3.0, and even I have found schools that give aid at that level.

At 3.5, your options open a ton more. And 3.8? Come on

Go talk to the school counselor or something. You are NOT stuck with just in state schools, I promise you

And not all private schools are insanely expensive. We have Springfield College, Rider and Shenandoah on a preliminary list, as well as a couple women's colleges (which doesn't help you, just saying)

Virginia has a fund that gives a little money for attending a private school in state - does MD have anything similar? That might help with someplace like Goucher

I honestly think you'll be pleasantly surprised at your options once you really get into the research

this is not our experience at all. can you share the schools?

WVU, for starters. They have a scholarship/discount chart online.

I think you should consider some of the PA schools

Maybe NJ as well

STEM = UMBC
Education = Towson

I have never hear of Towson “giving good merit” as someone posted, but have heard of UMBC giving some. My kid got $3500 merit aid annually (good student, decent test scores - nothing out of this world). Has to keep 3.25 for merit there, unlike others where it is 3.0.
Was a very good and affordable in state option.

Do you have access to Naviance? You have good advice here but if your children are taking honors and AP courses at a MD public school and have a 3.8 uw, I would think they have a good shot at College Park if they apply by November 1. Admissions get a lot more competitive after that. So have them prep for testing so they can have multiple scores early and meet that deadline.

The Towson rep told my dd that with her 3.8, she’d get 10k off tuition. Maybe they were lying.

It's one of MD's lower tier schools for low performing kids. "If your heart is beating, you are in" kinda school.
