AOPS online vs AOPS in-person?

My son appreciates being in a math class with other kids who are good at math and enjoy math. The in person classes provide him with a sense that he is not the only kid who likes math and that makes them worth it to us.

My son, an elementary student, does much better in a class with his peers than any online class. I also know besides teaching, they break out into small groups to work together. Like PP above, I like that he is around other kids who are good at math and like math, and actively interacts with them, in addition to the teacher.

I had to pick DS up early last week because of another commitment we could not miss. He was in class for 45 minutes out of the normal 1 hr and 45 minutes. He said to me, “Mom, it felt like I was only in class for 10 minutes”. I told him time goes by fast when you are having fun. That’s all I need to know that in person was worth it. Lastly, I don’t drive back and forth. I just go to the nearby coffee shop to do work, check emails, etc.. until he is done.

I want to add that AoPS in-person class is not only lecturing, they typically do group work or math games at the end of each class (at least for Beast Academy level). It was really fun for my kids. Again, the material is not easy. If your kids genuinely like math, I recommend AoPS in-person classes.

Do the kids have to keep their camera on for Aops Virtual Academy classes?

I think the terms say they're supposed to leave it on and when I walked by when DC was in class I could see others in the little squares on their screen. Still, there are times when he has muted briefly during class out of consideration for others.

They do this online too in breakout rooms.
