Classic American boy’s name

James is my #1 boys name but sadly my SIL used it first. I love it. It’s strong, classic, and yes, very popular among my kids’ classes.

Dan definitely but I don’t know if this generation even knows that Jim is a nickname for James. All the little James’ I know go by James or Jamie.

Most of the Jim's I know started going by Jim later, like high school/college. So I think its still popular, just doesn't catch on when they are little. I've seen the same thing happen with Robert---Robbie/Bobby--Rob/Bob.

DP. None of the millennial adults named James that I know go by Jim, either. Just the boomers.

Like them both but prefer Daniel. If we'd had another boy that's the name we'd have used.

No one ever shortens his name either. Not so say it will never happen, but it's not automatic like some names seems to be. I think the one syllable thing cuts some of it off.

Agree. I have a James and no one shortens it. I think it’s a generational thing—there used to be a lot of Jims, but I don’t think that applies so much to the current generation of Jameses.

I like Daniel better. I don’t really know which would be considered more “classic American.” I feel like a lot of times when people say “classic American” what they really mean is WASP (I do not personally agree w that connotation but that seems to be what is meant by that terminology a lot of times IME) so in that sense I guess James is more WASPy since Daniel is a Hebrew name. I think they both are and have been popular for years in the US but James more so. And there have been 6 US presidents named James but none named Daniel…I don’t know. I guess a question for OP is what you mean by classic American. America is a very diverse country so what’s “classic” to one culture/ethnicity here isn’t to another.

My two sons are James and Daniel! Can’t go wrong with either. We come across other boys named James more often than Daniel. I have never heard of a Jim or Dan among my kids’ generation. Only in the 50+ crowd!

We are Jewish, and I do think of Daniel as a Hebrew name. If you’re going for American, James is more Anglo. That said, God protected Daniel from being killed by the lions, so there’s that

We were going to name our last boy either Peter or David. They are both much lower on the SSA name database but had the same vibe as James and Daniel.

These are nice. So classic!

I think both are great names for a boy.
Practice saying the version you expect to use and see what suits you.
Good luck.
