How to comfort my sibling

Exciting update!

After rejections at Emory and Northwestern, and waitlists at Haverford and Hamilton, she finally got in at Wellesley (with 80K+ in grant aid)! Mom, I, and she can't stop crying from gratitude.

Per year? If so that’s basically a full ride, correct?

Yes. 80k a year, nearly a full ride.

Final update: she's also in at Claremont McKenna and Swarthmore College.

To highlight how random decisions are, she was outright rejected by: Scripps, Vassar, Middlebury, Colby, Wesleyan, Colgate, Carleton, and Barnard.

We are experiencing a mix of emotions, but mostly gratitude, at this amazing opportunity.

Oh, wow. That is fantastic news about all the acceptances and the money! I am the poster who recommended updating the app with recent honors etc. I have been hoping you would report back. I am so pleased for all of you. How wonderful to have great choices -- she earned them. Hooray!!!!

This post make no sense. If her EFC is zero, it should not cost her 10 to 15k in loans a year to go to her state flagship. Also, it’s May 1. What do you mean, she’s waiting to hear from other SLACs and universities? Is she waitlisted there too? She should have heard from now.

Anyway. In case this is real. You should praise her entry into the state schools, stress how those are great options, and say, hey, if a waitlist works out, great, but otherwise, you are still on a great track.

The post makes total sense. Transfer admissions come out in May. Very few state schools meet full need, so most kids who attend state schools who are wealthy need to take out significant loans.

Also you should read the whole thread before posting!

Amazing! Congratulations! I imagine need-awareness was a big factor for some of those rejections. But so fantastic it worked out.

With room and board, it is very much possible to need that many loans..
