An apartment building is actually a good place for a child to do odd jobs and chores because he doesn't have to go far, in many cases he doesn't have to leave the building.
I had a friend who lived in an apartment building and her son actually posted on the building bulletin board that he was available for odd chores. There were tenants who were going out of town and he would stop by and walk or feed pets, water plants. One lady who had limited mobility, paid him to make weekly trips to the supermarket. She didn't need a lot but she would give him something like $40 to buy like $25 of groceries and he kept whatever wasn't spent. The supermarket was only a few blocks from their building, so he was only walking like 5 minutes each way. Once people got to know him and people talked, word got around and he would get calls from other neighbors asking him to do odds and end chores. He actually made a fair amount of money and didn't spend a huge amount of time. He tended to work like 45 min to an hour a few times a week after school. It went fast because it was all in the same building. So he could go around and care for 3 pets in less than an hour. |
