Tell me about Hyundai as a family car?

We don't need an SUV for our second vehicle, and are looking at four door sedans. We are looking to buy a certified pre-owned car, can't quite swing new with current prices. We would love another Honda but it looks like Hyundais are in our budget of 20k and Hondas and Toyotas are not. Is a Hyundai a good, reliable car? Any advice would be helpful.

Hyundai is very reliable. Good experience with car & service.

We bought a Hyundai Entourage minivan 14 years ago when we had our third kid. It got better safety ratings and was significantly less expensive than the Honda and Toyota minivans we were comparison shopping. It's still going strong. Normal issues over the years but nothing like the extremely pricey work we had to have done on our VWs (I will never buy a VW again for that reason plus all the air emissions cheating. Shitty company.)

I'd get another Hyundai again, but for any car I'd look at the ratings on IIHS and only get a top safety pick+ for a family car.

Love my Santa Fe. It's a 2009 with 73K miles and have never had to get anything fixed (not due to a fault of my own). I think I may buy a Santa Fe when its time to trade in but that could be years from now with the way the car runs. I would not hesitate to buy a Hyundai again.

Having said that, if you want something flashy/impressive, it's not the brand for you. I value practical and reliable and it's exactly that.

Hyundai got its bad reputation decades ago when they were so terrible that banks would not even finance them due to their unreliability.

Along w/KIAs + Daewoo.

I have heard that the newer vehicles are much better & that those that own them are happy for the most part.

I remember when Hyundai was trying to look and sound like a higher end car brand®️.
They wanted to sound like “Honda” thus their moniker.

They had also copied the design styles of Jaguars, Mercedes-Benz, etc.

I would say these things are why many people today are still turned off by the brand.

And they might die in a wreck because they’re unsafe. But at least they might develop good cardio from preferring to walk to school rather than be seen in such a low class car. So there’s that.

Dumb a$$.

Extremely safe car
Excellent warranty

We have 2, one is 17 years old,one is 10. Better than CRV, Subaru.
10 year warranty cannot be beat. No one we know ever had an issue with a Hyundai.

I traded in my VW (too many engine and electric problems) and purchased a new Hyundai a little over 2 years ago. I could not be happier.

I think Hyundai/Genesis has better design than toyota/Lexus. I am seriously considering to get Genesis sedan.

I’d drive a 30 year old Lexus before I’d be caught dead in a brand new Hyundai. Or Genesis or whatever shiny badge they put on their crappy cars.

Hyundais are not at all crappy. You are probably confusing this car with some other brand.

We had an ‘09 Santa Fe too!

Great car. Absolutely loved that car. Got hit by a drunk driver and insurance totaled it. Broke my heart. Haven’t had a car since then that was as good as it was.

We have a newer Tucson and love that thing. Great safety ratings and we feel good having our teenage driver use it.

Just spent 57 grand on a Hyundai crossover (Ioniq 5). Who woulda' thunk that would ever be a reasonable thing to do, but its a fine automobile. High quality, high design, 10 year warranty....

Google class action lawsuit against Hyundai/Kia relating to excessive oil consumption

THIS. Garbage car for people with bad credit. We interviewed a nanny who looked very promising on zoom, but she showed up in a Hyundai when we met her in person. Needless to say, she didn’t get the job.

+1 I couldn’t take anyone who drove a Hyundai seriously. They’re obviously completely lacking in image-consciousness.

Sounds like she's the one who dodged a bullet. You sound like a horrible person to work for.

We usually manage to keep cars for ten years. Our Sonata lasted six.
