Does your nanny read up on child development/research on her off hours?

OP here. I’m asking because our nanny does and I think it’s extraordinary. Anytime a new issue comes up, she researched it. She’ll send me articles she finds interesting or directly pertains to my kids. I really love that about her. I was just wondering if other nannies do it.
what issue is she looking up? If my Nanny were constantly looking things up I would be concerned. I guess if my kid got labeled with a SN I would expect her to do some research in handling it… but other than that, I expect her to know things.

Ugh. Such a typical idiot DCUM response. “Constantly”? Who said constantly? And as a parent, do you never research topics that come up or read a new article?

OP, your nanny sounds wonderful and devoted to your kids best interest.
OP said “ anytime a new issue comes up” like what?

NP. I’m wondering the same thing. Like, is it basic issues like sleep, feeding, etc? I look those up bc I’m an amateur parent, but I feel like a “pro” nanny actually knows this stuff already and shouldn’t have to look it up. UNLESS the nanny does know it already and is just giving the mom evidence for her approach. But if nanny is regularly looking up other issues, then that sounds like your child has problems? And if your child has problems, seems like the parent should be on top of it, not nanny?

OP here. Issues like; my three year old started freaking out about getting static electrical shocks at the playground. My son wouldn’t touch any playground equipment and was scared. Nanny did research that night, had a solution the next day, and talked to DS about it. No more “zaps” as DS calls them.

Another example is her research into mindfulness that DS is doing at his preschool.

Nanny has taken online classes on math principles for toddlers and about sibling relationships when we had our second. Nanny already has her degree in Early Childhood Development but never tires of learning.

I never imagined that posting this question would elicit criticism. Foolish of me. I should have known better.

I’m off now.

I research whatever I want on my own time, or I don't, my choice. My employer is welcome to research whatever she wants. She's welcome to send me anything at any time she wants, and I will read whatever she sends during work hours. Sometimes I choose to continue reading during my time, sometimes I don't.

Op your nanny sounds amazing. How did you find her?

Our nanny does on occasion. She also researches what's going on in the community for kids. Just last week she took the kids to the local library and came home with all these flyers of stuff going on for kids, for me to check out and see if I want the kids to participate, either with me or with her. She's a gem (and yes we pay her very well, lol).

I don’t believe in child development. Just because a child was born pre mature with xy and z wrong doesn’t mean they will be shooting up herion in the streets at age 5. Give every kid a chance ! I said that once in a job interview and was asked to leave immediately !

WTF are you babbling about?

One of our nannies did this - because she truly loved the kids she worked with and when we faced challenges (really struggled with big emotions from 3-4) she wanted to try to help him as much as we did. she was also planning to be a mom and i think found it interesting and a way to make her job more enjoyable (she was a nanny b/c she loved being a nanny, not because she defaulted into the profession)

the flip side was she was a little judgemental when the way i wanted to approach something didn't align with her experience or expertise. but overall its great to feel someone is truly invested in your child's wellbeing

You can’t not believe in child development, idiot, It’s like not believing in gravity. Child development is the study of how a child grows and thinks.

My boss used to give me 300-500 page books to read on childcare. I’d read the description on Amazon and skip. Spent maximum 1 hour total on this, and since she didn’t compensate me for this, I’d do it at work, while the kids were awake. Nap times is for my break and chores that I’m paid to do. She still sends articles and I never read them. Skim for max 15 mins on my phone at work. If you want me to read YOUR interests, you can pay me.
