Should Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture not be played at the U.S. Capitol this July 4?

He’s long dead, not responsible for Ukraine.

So it’s fine.

Wait, did several posts here get deleted? Some nitwit (or someone attempting poorly done sarcasm) commented about how Tchaikovsky should be canceled because we had enough music already by cis white males, and some of us called that PP out, since Tchaikovsky is generally considered as having been homosexual. But those posts are all gone. Wow. I've seen far more off-topic and far more provocative stuff left in threads before. Maybe a post came along that was beyond the pale, but it's strange that all of that was deleted. Especially since things in other forums like relationships are left in threads that go wrong pretty quickly sometimes.

Then report them.

There's someone who's just crazy posting on every thread about cancelling white cis males and such.

Tchaikovsky wrote his music during the reign of the tsars. While odious, and certainly deserving of censure, that government has been definitively cancelled. As everyone associated with that time, including the composer himself, has long been dead, boycotting the music accomplishes absolutely nothing but depriving ourselves of it’s magnificence. That being said, I wouldn’t currently purchase Russian recordings.

Yes-- why were we anti French? I can't even recall.

French here. It was because our President Chirac declined to participate in the mass civilian murder that was Bush's war in Iraq, knowing full well the supposed weapons of mass destruction probably weren't there, and since he wasn't a British toadie, said "thanks, but no thanks".

AND FRIES ARE NOT FRENCH. THEY'RE BELGIAN!!!
But apparently some stupid Americans didn't know that.

And now, the Canadian dish Poutine (fries with gravy and various add-ons) is off the menu in some restaurants because it's spelled and pronounced exactly like Putin: his name is written Poutine in French and Canadian French, and pronounced exactly the same way.

Stupid. I won't stop clogging my arteries with this delicious repast just because of the homonym.

Poutine is gross anyway.

Is that really the reason? Many churches disapprove of that piece because it’s secular rather than religious, plus the marriage in the opera is doomed.

I don't know a single church that disapproves of The Wedding March. And I've been to a lot.

Nobody with an ounce of taste or culture would play The Wedding March anyway.

This piece was composed to celebrate Russian victory in war. Perhaps it is time to stop playing that piece at a celebration of independence and freedom.

Why not start putting all Russians and put them in internment camps? We have done it before so we know how.

I really wonder about people who seem to get off on things like this. JFC.

Here Comes the Bride is different than The Wedding March. The former was composed by Wagner; the latter by Mendelssohn.

But he’s also just another dead white male. Doesn’t equity demand we make space for a work by a BIPOC composer instead?

It’s very triggering for (closeted) Republicans.
