How much to pay 14-15 year old babysitter?

Anonymous
DD is 14 and just starting to sit.
I agree with $12 for a kid that age to watch kids ES age.
For a 15 yo that is COR certified and able to watch small children I would go up to $15.

Just noticed age of the infant. Honestly I would not trust a baby that little with anyone under 16

I live in San Diego in SoCal where the minimum wage begins at $15/HR.

So paying anything less than that may be illegal if the minimum wage laws/limits are applicable for minors.
Am not sure.

minimum wage allows for taxes, social security etc to be taken out. Most teen babysitters are getting paid cash and not trying to support themselves or a family. Not the same thing.

We always pay at least $6 per hour for our 14 year old sitter. I make sure to give one of the dollar in quarters because there is a classic gumball machine down by our 7-11 that she likes to use

If I were her mother, I would not allow her to sit for only $6/hr. Even if she has to do nothing but just be acwsmn body, I would not allow her to sit for less than $20/hr. If you expect her to feed them dinner, bathe them, then it would be $20/hr.

We pay ours $15/hr. I am home but they will also play outside.

Ten years ago bread was $3.00 a loaf: today it is $6.00 a loaf
Times and prices change. If it's her first job then I would start her out at $15 and if you like her and she is good with children then I would increase to $17.50/hr after six months and $20/hr after a year. This way you have a reliable babysitter for years to come and because you have been fair and generous with her, she will be loyal to you.

Where the hell do you live, Anchorage?

Virginia and Dave's bread is almost $6/loaf and so is organic bread.

Sooooo don’t buythat then. Problem solved.

Neither are your kids. Enjoy staying home, cheapskate,

Anonymous wrote:Thanks for the replies! This is super helpful. I don't want to be cheap or out of touch with current rates (first kid, so still learning these things!), but $15 feels high comparatively speaking. I'd also be more inclined to use her versus the other sitters at $12/hour (at $15/hour, there isn't that much of difference in rate to get a highly qualified sitter).

$15 is the minimum wage in MD at least
If you're in the south I assume you can pay peanuts

Oh the kid is $14? Hmm... $10-$15

Where I live the trend seems to be around $1 per year of age...my DD(14) makes $15 and her friends around her age make around the same. This is for actual babysitting with no parents home, not a mother's helper.

We pay our high school babysitter $15/hr to watch our 6 year old on date nights.

She also watched him Summer 2020 while we WFH (we were home, she came from 9-1 M-F and we paid her $200/week ($10/hr) she was 14 our kid was 4 at the time.
