The Mercedes Lackey Valdemar series. Be careful, there are a lot of books. STart with the first trilogy "Arrows of the Queen" so you get introduced to the background of the kingdom of Valdemar. After that, you can read them in many different orders. The prequel history books. The initial series has less magic because Valdemar has been protected from magic (by magic). After the first series, there are a lot of books/trilogies in the series that have a lot of magic including the prequels Griffin series, Magic series, and the sequel Winds and Storm series.
David Eddings Belgariad and Mallorean Pentologies (same world) and then the Elenium and Tamuli trilogies (a second world) The Dragon Prince and Dragon Star series by Melanie Rawn. A little bit more mature than pure YA, but a very good series. |

What no mention of the Wheel of Time? Also Terry Brooks

+1 to David Eddings! Older, yes, but so so good, especially the Belgariad/Mallorean series. I reread those every few years I love them so much. And also +1 to Terry Brooks' Shannara series. The TV series is pretty fun too, at least the first few episodes which are all I've had the chance to watch thus far. |
+ to the Patrick Rothfuss series! It is fantastic. |

There's WITCH by Finbar Hawkins, a UK writer (brother to the actress, Sally Hawkins) and it is beautifully written.
There's also an audio version available on Amazon It has drawings in it by the writer which are incredible. I would say it is a YA / Crossover book. I absolutely love it. He has a follow up book, Stone and is currently writing the 3rd in the series. |
