+1. I'm the one who asked you about the area and type of IEP. I don't think whomever recommended Forest Knolls ES has your best interests at heart.

MCPS has good teachers and programs, but you have to know which programs and which teachers aren't into playing politics with the children. Unfortunately the current MCPS leadership is not very good and until they're replaced you'll probably see a lot of bitter comments posted here.

It's DCUM! We always see a lot of bitter comments posted here!

Have you contacted any advocates? They could help. Try Rich Weinfeld, Jen Ritchotte, Stephanie Frumkin. You can find other names on the special needs board. You might not need an advocate for the process but maybe they can give you a free consult and you can get info on different schools that would be good for your kid.

DP. I will highly recommend Forest Knolls ES. It has a great staff, excellent teachers, and a very involved parent community. And it should have homes in your price range. There's also a neighborhood swim club.

_Extremely_ strong second for Forest Knolls! I have more than one DC with unique needs and FKES has been fantastic with all of them, even across staff turnovers. K teacher there was a complete game-changer for one SN kid, too. Plus the community in both the school and the neighborhood is just terrific. We're so happy to have the chance to raise our family here.

Awesome thank you!

another vote for FKES! They also have the physical disabilities program so they are very inclusive and have a strong PTA and community. I have also heard good things from friends about Oakland Terrace and Flora Singer.

OP, if you're house-hunting, make sure you check addresses on the official MCPS site:

There was a recent boundary change and the real estate sites are still not updated with the new info.

This is an incredibly unkind sentiment. I'm not the PP, but I've heard great things about FKES and accusing someone of making a bad faith suggestion is just a really crappy way to behave.

To make that accusion while recommending only schools in parts of the county that are outside OP's price range is just doubling down on the kind of classist, nonsense that permeates this board. You should be ashamed PP.

I did post this in the special needs group but was advised to also post here and see if I get any good suggestions.
Currently living in Prince George’s but wanting to move to MCPS. Have DS with an IEP (he’s 3.5).. any good elementary schools you would suggest us. Bethesda is out of our budget unfortunately. I am mainly looking for an school that places him in general education (he’s high functioning) but with some extra support. Any pointers are appreciated.. my lease is ending February end so running a little out of time.
Please advice.

The same services are offered at all MCPS schools. They even have the same teachers and curriculums. There is little to no difference.

There is a difference. Not all schools are the same, only the base line is the same. And of course they don't have the same teachers. How ridiculous is that as a statement???

Thanks for defending us. I am just a genuinely happy parent who thinks other people deserve to know what a great job FKES is doing, in case it might also be able to help their kid. I do not work for MCPS and have no personal benefit to derive from telling OP that this school has done my family a lot of good. And I hope others have similar stories to tell about their own ESs, because one thing I think we can all agree upon is that kids deserve the best possible school for them.

Obviously, schools change: staff members move around, principals leave for other positions, kids grow up and graduate. But right this moment we are so grateful to be where we are.

OP here, I will most definitely prioritize FKES for my son. One positive comment is enough to keep me going and I got many different positive ones from you guys for this school.

I have a kiddo with an IEP at FKES and administrators truly care about kids. Teachers too. It’s a special place. Good luck OP!

+1 awesome community with affordable housing. We moved here thinking it was a starter home and haven't wanted to move. It's a really special place. I have also heard great things about Flora Singer. My friend is an advocate and she said the Flora Singer special ed team is great. You might try to look on MCPS for class size info at various schools. Title 1 schools have very low class sizes. Focus schools are slightly larger.

Forest Knolls feeds Northwood.

Anyone steering a family into a ES that feeds a HS with a 16% dropout rate and 80% graduation rate is incredibly unkind themselves.
