Referee shortage-why does it cost money to become a ref

Anonymous
My teen son refs 2 Rec games and makes $60 in 2hrs.

No other place he'll make $60 in just two hours.

He prefers to do EDP games and they pay in cash. He makes $35 as an AR.

Btw, who provides training free of charge OP?

That can easily be paid off in just 3 games.

My kid pointed that out too, in the sense of why would he take a job and work several hours for free just for the chance to work more hours for pay?

So he doesn't want to spend $85 to make over $1,000??? You both suck at math. LOL.

It’s more like $150 plus at least ten hours of time (training), plus the time you ref games for free to earn back the $150, before you make a cent. It’s clearly not worth it.

My son did the training over the winter break. We paid for it. He already had the uniform from previous years.

I guess you got to love the game to do it too.

You are crying for pennies.

So you do 7 or 8 games to earn back what it costs. If you don't like reffing, you'll probably know by that point.
If you keep going, a teen can make far more than you would in any part time job, in far less time, and if you continue until you can do better leagues, there's serious money to be made.
