OP of this comment. Responding to other posters: Kid had a 75th percentile test score and the remainder of the application was inline with typical FCPS admits. Only hook was instate.

From what I understand, there were many many kids with your kid’s same profile who were rejected. Is that the case?

Target: Va Tech. Admitted
Last year our older kid applied to the same school EA also a target and was deferred. Eventually withdrew application and went elsewhere. Happy there.

Anonymous wrote:Admitted to ED to a reach in theory (<20% admit) but DC's counselor said it was no more than a high target. SLAC. Originally DC was going to SCEA/REA to HYP and ED2 to the SLAC. But the latter was a better fit, and chose ED1.

DC's counselor said a number of schools on list were high target, including ED, but I didn't think there were enough safeties (technically just one though I thought DD could end up deferrred/rejected b/c of yield protect). DD got into a "reach in theory" so never knew how the rest of the list would have shaken out.

Our FCPS DC was rejected ED at an Ivy with 1540/3.89uw/4.41w/full IB diploma. Bummed but not unexpected. We encouraged them to apply ED at a slightly less selective school that seems to give a better ED-bump but they insisted the Ivy was their top choice. On the one hand, DC's stats are in line with most top colleges and they have to let somebody in so why not take a shot. On the other hand, these stats are a dime a dozen at these schools.

My DC also rejected at Williams

ED for low reach, as another poster described. Accepted.

DS apples ED to low reach. Accepted and happy there.

Accepted ED to reach. As another poster said the grades, test scores, and the activities are all pretty stellar coming from this region. It really comes down to essays, as well as interest areas.

Did ED to a target/slight reach because that was his dream school and no guarantees he’d get in even though stats were in line. Accepted ED.

Reach. Admitted. Very thankful and relieved.

UPenn / 4.0 gpa UW from a private / strong course load/ 1540 SATs / legacy

Why strange? Instate and 75th percentile of overall range isn’t an admit, especially if everything else is standard FCPS UVA quality (i.e. dozen AP, weighted GPA of 4.4, quality recs and essays)? Also, varsity letter all four years in a sport. Sure, other kids with this profile may have been rejected, but objectively, the profile is WELL within the admit rate. Comment is strange.
