We have actually been very low contact with her until now. We've only been talking to her more in the last few months because my dad has severe dementia and I'm the only living relative.

To make the whole thing more ridiculous, I did 23andme and it turns out she's half Jewish and had no idea. She's convinced it's a conspiracy.

Mary, Maria, Miriam, and Mariam are all the same name in different languages. I don't think most people will think of leprosy when they hear the name Mariam. I mean, David killed a man and slept with his wife and as punishment his child died but people still use the name David and don't associate it with adultery.

Noah got drunk and cursed his grandson.

I named my kids after birth and even still- no one was happy the first time they heard the names. And they’re in the top 100!

Also you have to remember that boomers named their kids and liked different names like Ashley, Lindsay, Jessica, Tiffany. Not sure their thoughts matter. My mom think Evelyn is the worst name ever and I think it’s elegant.

I do really like Esther but my husband hates it. Our firstborn has one of the names from the first PP's list, actually. Rebecca and Lydia were on our list but my husband didn't really care for them. He's so picky. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I agree PP. In fact, I chose it for our dd 15 years ago. 😀

To be fair, my mom's taste isn't too bad. She likes Elizabeth, Juliana, Annabelle, etc. She's just racist and so hates "foreign" names. I swear, my parents are basically the Dursleys.

Also, Miriam is the Jewish version of Mary and Mariam is the Muslim version. I have no issues with those names but would just assume you weren’t Christian.

+1 - every Mariam I know is Arab Muslim or Arab Christian. It’s a beautiful name and well regarded in the Middle East.

Mariam with nickname Mamie. That was my aunt’s name.

OP, these people are rude. now you know why people are paranoid about divulging baby names before the brith.

My MIL is so rude she actually said "well, I didn't like (our kid's name), but now it's growing on me!" I swear, some old ladies sit around and think of ways to insult their DILs.

Pay no mind to someone so ignorant, OP.

I guess the name is very different culturally. Would they feel differently about Mary? As a pp mentioned, Mariam, Mary, Maria are all same name in different languages.

Pp continuing… in any case, you now learnt your lesson to not share name of your kid. Also, get thick skin, you’re in for a ride of everyone and their mother criticizing your choices for your kid. Just do you and learn to ignore the noise.

Anonymous wrote:I would assume Mariam was Persian, since everyone I know with that name is of Iranian descent. I always liked it personally - easy to recognize/pronounce but just a little different. Although I've seen Americans assume the name is Maryanne, which must be annoying. Either way, go with the name you love OP!

Same. I like it! Your relatives are rude!

In Arabic, the name of Virgin Mary, is Mariam. It is a name used by both Christians and Muslims.

Miriam is a lovely name. I know a Latina Miriam and it sounds so beautiful with Spanish pronunciation.
