No matter how great your nanny is she still won’t have the physical energy of a younger woman. It’s asking a lot for her to take care of an energetic toddler full-time. Grandparents may be old but they are also not usually serving as full-time childcare 40 hours a week.

An early 70’s woman can absolutely have the same physical energy as a 20 year old woman for the job! You clearly know some very sickly older people. My mom is 81 and runs circles around me and my siblings!! My mom also takes care of herself, has a quiet and calm home life, which gives her the daily energy she needs to chase after my kids (3 and 8) and always has.

It’s health and attitude, OP, not age. Please don’t give credence to the ageists on this forum.

You're just being hyperbolic.

NP here and I don’t think PP is hyperbolic at all. If you don’t think ageism exists you’re living in a dream bubble that will burst one day.

And if you don’t know any 70 yr olds who can run circles around 20 year old, you need to get out more.

You seem oddly defensive about this.

Nothing odd about being anti-ageist, anti-racist and anti-sexist, PP. More people should be.

Pawning off your kids on little old ladies to raise them is a bit much, don't you think? There's a reason why the biological cut off for getting pregnant in in the 40s.

Yes, and some evolutionary biologists think its so that mothers would have help from older women who were no longer raising children. Seriously.

Not women in their 70s. 50s, maybe. Not 70s.

+1. The concept of the den/community. Older females help with the raising of young off spring.

? But “pawning off” your children on younger women - who are fitter and better equipped than the mother since they didn’t give birth - is better? Encouraging you competition for males attention and offspring devotion is preferable. Ha ha!! You clearly know nothing about evolutionary biology.

Depends on the fitness of the 50 and 70 yr olds.

It’s not ageist to point out that a 70+ woman is different from someone younger when it comes to a job involving running after energetic kids.

NP here. It totally depends on the health and fitness of the 70 year old nanny. People are in better health today and easily working until 75 and living to 100. Watch the senior marathon runners and tennis players. It’s a different world now and we need to adapt our thinking to the changing times.

I wouldn’t dismiss a 70 yr old nanny based on her age.

What poor financial decisions has she made in life that she has to work as a nanny at 70 years old?! This would be a pass for me I’d look for someone in there 40s maybe 50 if you just prefer an older nanny.

This.

My mother is almost 75 and a terrific caregiver. She watched my 3 year old for most of the pandemic.

you know, there are LOTS reasons someone can’t afford to retire, that have nothing to do with poor financial decisions. Also, you seem pretty smug for someone who can’t be bothered to use the correct form of their/they’re/there.

Have you met any old people? They love Facebook!

In the other post you mentioned that references said she can’t lift much, but you didn’t specify how much is much. My personal opinion is that nannies should be fit enough to lift and carry 25+ pounds.
