What do middle schoolers do in the summer?

We usually spend the summer in my home country - it a bit of sightseeing, a bit of vegging out, and a bit of math to give him some headway for next year.

One week of sports sleep-away camp.
Two weeks of tech day camp.
One week of family vacation.

Otherwise he'll be at home on the Xbox.

Mine is in 7th grade, not sporty and doesn't much like the pool. Not interested in overnight camp. I'm thinking of seeing if he can be a mother's helper--he loves younger children--and maybe some kind of volunteering with kids? I'm not sure. It's a tricky age. I will also look for camps geared for older kids and see if I can find something he likes for a week or two.
