I was not aware about her family. Natal was a bastion of pro-British sentiments throughout most of the 20th century and many whites there were quite disdainful of Afrikaners (Afrikaans not even taught at many post secondary schools). Of course, that doesn't mean that these English speakers were free of racism, far from it. Still am shocked, though, at the depths of her virulence.

i am not at all a Lara Logan fan, but to say she “lied about being raped in Egypt” really creates a false impression that she made the Egypt incident up and that she wasn’t sexually assaulted, neither of which is true.

Some say “rape” is only rape when it is done with PIV sex by overwhelming physical force. Many use a broader definition of rape. Rape with digital insertion, rape with objects, non-consensual oral sex, non-consensual anal penetration. Logan, as a survivor, is not obligated to go into the exact details of her rape publicly. She ignored warnings to clear the area and elevated her career over sensitivity to the people she was exposing to government reprisal by filming their faces AND the crew members and handlers charged with protecting her. When the crowd descended on her as she richly deserved for rubbernecking, she saw a chance to work an angle and then took it. Her story changed from alleging the men took turns gang raping and sodomizing her to “clarifying” she was “raped” with “hands” when evidence and witness accounts contradicted her claims. She claimed the men had inserted flagpoles into her orifices, but then when questioned about it on 60 Minutes, she said the men beat her with the flagpoles. Her injuries weren’t consistent with having been beaten with heavy objects by the 300 men she claimed attacked her. When the whole story started to fall apart, she clammed up and hid behind her victim status, positioning anyone who questioned her as a rape apologist. In the end, she played on stereotypes of savage Arab/African men to get publicity and raise her profile. Her colleagues and peers at CBS, CNN, and the same news sources that have now turned on her for political reasons were all complicit in her lies. Years later, she was demoted for having fabricated aspects of her reporting on Benghazi. Guess what? She was a liar and opportunist all along, which everyone recognizes now only because doing so is politically expedient.

As someone who has been "raped by hands", I would never claim that I was "raped". That is very insulting to actual rape victims.

Whatever the technicalities here are, it still sounds HORRIBLE, she was violated, she was sexually assaulted and beaten, should be enough. What are you in charge of rating rape? "please rate your rape on the scale from 1-10, only those who get a score 5+ are eligible for victimhood and our sympathy". If you subscribe to this POV, then you are just like all those who minimize things like date-rapes and blaming the rape/assault victims for "leading on" their violators. How hypocritical. Imagine yourself in this situation when you are attacked by a CROWD of people stripping you of clothes and violating your body in different ways, does it matter if there was no penis insertion?
